Yeah, kind of like how I wish I was a hardcore vintage bbs refugee gracing MV with my presence so I could regularly impart scooter wisdom to the non-scene modern-riding wannabes.

I like you ... you call 'em like you see 'em.

I don't like the term "refugee", though. It implies i'm escaping from something other than the rigmarole or lack of traffic over there... In reality i'm just more needed over here, and there's more to read.

Eric, you're my hero!

I'm sure this thread was started with the best of intentions,
but it is sort of irking to the vast majority of us
who will probably never be able to get MV patches of any description

+1 Eric, I don't know you, mate, and really don't have a beef with you, but after all the endless vintage circle-jerk BBS 80's modder-than-thou threads, your thread made me throw up in my mouth a little.

Cheers!

I think you've hit the nail on the head of precisely why i'm not a BBS refugee, so to speak. Those threads are tiresome to me as well, and i opt to come over here to escape them.

What I was trying to say there,
was that I greatly admired the way Eric managed to explain how MVers might be aggravated by this thread
without causing deep offense to highly-respected old-timers

I guess when the forum is older than most of your scooters it seems like a really old, dusty thing ..doesn't it? Something you can really kick back, reminisce and be nostalgic about...
*in old codger voice*
I was there when Lucky and Spock both still posted! *waves cane in air*
3 yrs ago seems like a long time, gas was under $3, 3-Wheelers were called trikes, Detroit was selling SUV's,
and few people had even heard of our next President. I'm not jealous of these flag waving patch owners.
Why should you be? Quit pissing in the pool and let people live.
It's just a thread, like your pride in letting everyone know you have OLD scooters:

You're a straight-shooter, too, Eric, and despite the fact that you felt the need to piss all over my thread I generally like your posts. Even if the thread was a "circle jerk" (as you so delicately put it) so what? There aren't a dozen a day on a narrow subject that 90% of MV's users can't really participate in?
L from Jersey wrote:

I'm a bit surprised that such an innocuous subject could cause ill will. Though I joked about its great value I didn't realize that some might actually covet a patch enough to get irked by this thread. Mine is actually in a drawer gathering dust (sorry, Jess).

I don't start many threads, and I would never start one with the idea of being exclusionary. One of the things I like about MV is that it's not that. The extraordinary growth of the site and a different patch thread had me thinking of how Jess (apparently) used a free patch as a lure to get non-registered users and <2-post "lurkers" to participate in a fledgling forum. I thought it was brilliant move. I wondered who was still here and remembered it so I asked.

I happened to stumble upon MV shortly after Jess launched. I'm member #22...which is worth exactly nothing. There are many members who know more about scooters than me. Deriving some kind of self worth from the fact that I randomly happened to join when I did would be pretty freakin' lame.

It might have been a goofy, throwaway topic, but it couldn't possibly be of lesser value than some of the stuff that gets posted.

While I'll lose no sleep over it, as the OP I was offended...and made that clear. It just a drag to watch another thread turn negative. Especially my thread.

I wish I could lord the age of my scooter over older, more seasoned riders, as if the age of my bike magically conferred upon me an equivalent amount of experience.

I keed, I keed! And saying so absolves me of any reprimand for personal attacks, right? At least, I think that's the way it works.

If listing what bikes i own in the little box you've provided in my profile means i LORD it over people, then we're some serious trouble. Perhaps the MP3 folks who list it in their "scooters owned" section should stop lording the fact they paid as much for their 1 scooter as i did for all of mine combined.

It's all good, though. My bikes each all have 3 wheels... one is just called a spare.

bah-dum... CRSSSHH ( that was a rim shot )

Here is my interpretation:
Running is painful. It hurts the knees, joints, and if you are female or overweight, it hurts the boobs. According to the above, running = the risk of failure.

If you are a failure, all the running in the world will only make you skinnier and hooked on pain releivers. Running will not make you successful. The only way to become successful is to walk, or better, sit at your computer and post your way to success. Everything else is abject failure.
Don't risk running. Stop excersizing - because you are already a failure.

1) you completely have a point... most posts here i skip over as i'm sure most people who have been around for a while do to.

2) I think my crass-ness ( which i know isn't a word ) which i meant to be tongue-in-cheek was misinterpreted ... the point i was trying to make was a middle finger to the generic MV love-in thread, which i find as tedious as the threads on the BBS by "boringoldfart" or the rest of that ilk. There's a reason i post here more than there. I get tired of the anti-mv sentiment over there as much as i do the "MV circle-jerk" sentiment over here. I just want people to talk about scooters. See where i was trying to go?

3) This isn't a fight thread... i honestly couldn't care about patches and who has them - normally i would have just clicked past it but i'm in a bad mood today so i replied with a pissy response. Sorry. I do think it's funny they were given out as motivator to get people over here, though. A novel idea.

cheers.

I think the word "run" was used in a different context as in "there is a chance for failure" Anyway, I love quotes and quips, and here is one from last week that made me chuckle. "If we are what we eat, then I'm cheap, fast and easy".

I was just speculating so I can't speak for Jess as to why he did it. I wasn't suggesting, though, that he gave out patches to get people "over here". I was guessing that it was to get unregistered and registered lurkers that he already had to participate (you had to have 3 posts to get a patch, if I recall correctly).

That's more or less correct. The patches were a thinly-veiled ploy to get unregistered people to register, and to get them posting. The biggest problem facing a new forum is critical mass -- you've got to get x number of people posting y posts per day, or there won't be any reason for anyone to visit, let alone register, let alone post. It's a chicken-and-egg problem, and I thought the patches would be a good way to short-circuit that problem.

I guess it worked.

I was also fascinated by the rich body of artwork represented in the embroidered patches of the scooter world, and wanted to explore that for myself. Looking back, I can't really say that the first patch was "art", but I created it, and I was proud of it nonetheless.

I should point out that nobody ever called me on the fact that each free patch was also an advertisement for the site...

I happened to stumble upon MV shortly after Jess launched. I'm member #22...which is worth exactly nothing. There are many members who know more about scooters than me. Deriving some kind of self worth from the fact that I randomly happened to join when I did would be pretty freakin' lame.
You may think it's lame, but being member #22 does count for something in my book. Having familiar faces that are still around and still contributing is something I really, genuinely enjoy about running MV.

Besides, you've probably absorbed immense amounts of information (and quite a bit of dreck) through osmosis by now.

You get a 2005 MV patch. Since yours is in the drawer, you probably don't need another one.

Well, yeah, I actually know a helluva lot more about scooters than I used to. MV has been an incredibly helpful resource. I've even done some of my own wrenching because of what I've learned here.

My point about being #22 was not that it hasn't been valuable to be a member since early on (it definitely has) but rather that the earlier member > newer member thing does not apply. Not here.

Now I gotta go dust off that damn patch.

See-- you won something already. If it's still in a drawer, this is the perfect opportunity to get yourself a Corazzo shop jacket, and start stitchin'! 8)

Yeah, when I didn't get a PM from my personal "counselor," I figured you must be away. Somehow we got by with just two mods and the admin...
John, you know I love ya even when I'm not sending you inspirational PMs. 8)

Seriously, people. Stop the infighting...there are MORE than enough patches to go around!

To avoid obvious legal issues, I had to modify the original '05 patch design slightly. But hey, we've all been forwarded that one e-mail about how we only read the first and last letters of a word anyway, and that your brain still reads the word "correctly" even if the middle letters are jumbled up. Trust me, no one will ever know that you weren't an original '05 member, and that in reality you joined up two months ago. Now you too can rock the "original" MV patch design and be the envy of your friends, your enemies, even your frenemies! The best part is even if someone still notices the slight "misspelling", you can tell them it was a misprint and is worth even MORE than the regular ones.

Don't wait! Send your payments to me now! Supplies aren't limited, but considering how in demand these bad boys are, the starting price will be set at $50 per patch.

"Wod is for Wodern" t-shirts coming soon.
