I've searched through the pertinent threads but not found exactly what I'm looking for. I'm having a custom upholsterer redo the seat for my MP3 as I'm 6'5" and I need to sit farther back on it and the moulded backrest is in the way. I'm going to have them raise the front portion of the seat to match the rear portion so that it's a consistent height overall.

Now, to my question:

I'd like to include some memory foam as the top layer but I'm not sure what to get them to put in or the thickness of the memory foam portion. I'm wondering if any forum members could comment on this?

Cheers,

Simon

Well, let me bump this up and add what I've found out by Googling as much as I could.

Seems like 5-1/2 lb memory foam about 1" thick could work. I'd still like to hear from anyone who has any first hand experience on this though.

Ciao,

Simon

Seat
6'5" on a MP3? Anyway, try Sargent or Mustang motorcycle seat makers.

Thoughts on Memory Foam
Perhaps you should rethink the memory foam idea. My finace and I bought a memory foam mattress a couple of months ago and ended up hating it. The issue was that our bodies sank so deep into the mattress that it was hard to turn., felt like you were climbing out of a tar pit! Very comfortable, but sort of a buried feeling.

It just seems to me that I might like more bounce under my seat and not have my tush sink into a pit. I also hate my memory foam pillow for the same reason.

Hey there's an idea. Can you get a hold of a memory foam pillow and try sitting on it for a while? Nothing beats empirical evidence.

Just my 2 cents...
Dave

Dave, thanks for the feedback. I've got a fair amount of experience with memory foam, from our mattress to our pillows. What I'm looking for from it is to just have a thin layer to relieve any pressure points during the ride. I have an Airhawk cushion works well for this (as long as it's on a fairly flat surface, but I don't want anything on top of the finished seat.

Tempurpedic memory foam beds are actually very stiff. I have one and it took some time to get used to just how firm it is. Of course they do offer more "deluxe" models with softer top layers but IME you really want as firm a bed as you can tolerate.

I'm shocked more products aren't using it like couches and things like MC seats

We have that bed. The Tempurpedic "Celebrity", the one with the pillow top thing. It's NICE...and it damn well better be for what it cost!

Oh, btw, I had the same problem with the stock seat on my GTS...I'm a bigger guy too, 6'2 and that rise in the seat was right where I wanted to sit. I contacted Jay at Pirate Upholstery and he whipped up one that suits me perfectly!

That looks great! Did you have any kind of foam options?
