My advice is to not pressure her too much to ride with you, because if something happens and she gets hurt, you might not be able to forgive yourself. Make sure it's her idea when she finally does ride.
I convinced my girlfriend to sign up for the MSF Basic Rider Course with me, she fell on a slow turn, and three months later, she still has a lot of pain in her thumb. Now we have sold all her riding gear because she will never ride again, not even behind me, because she's afraid of falling and getting even more seriously injured. Some people just shouldn't ride or be coerced into riding if they don't have that "itch" that some of us have for riding. |

I found a lady on the corner who said I could ride her for $50 an hour but that doesn't feel right... Help me guys/gals, how do you get good enough to ride your partner. Yes, I typed it this way so everyone could have a little fun... If your dealer doesn't offer this; and you don't have kids that can be used as crash dummies ...my suggestion is to take your scooter and your wife to a very quiet parking lot or street and have her go for a ride with you at a very comfortable speed. That way you can both practice riding with each other. |

OK, folks. More than one post on this thread has been pulled already.
The moderators would really rather spend their time out riding rather than monitoring Romper Room. Keep things under control here to avoid having the thread locked. Thanks for understanding. --Deborah ⚠️ Last edited by pdxvespa on UTC; edited 1 time

So how much riding experience do you have? New to scooters? No MSF course? If you really are inexperienced, then I'm with your wife. Riding two up adds quite a bit of difficulty to balancing and cornering the scoot. More practice and a safety course first.
Now, if your wife is just uncomfortable on two wheels period - don't push it. She'll come around. Nothing like dangling the idea of a second scoot at some point. |

You've been riding for 28 years yet you "need more practice"?
Um, that sounds like "no, never" to me. Have you suggested going to a nice empty parking lot and having her ride two-up with you there? Perhaps she'd feel more comfortable if her two-up experience wasn't out on the streets to start. Ive not ridden two-up since college - and that was side-saddle on a motorcycle going 70 on the freeway (insane, but I was young and invulnerable) - but I would be unlikely to ride pillion now. But that's ONLY because I want to be on my own scooter or motorcycle!! Maybe she wants to "drive." |

See my topic above
It took time to convince her, but you are better off being very comfortable yourself so as not to scare her the first time.

Stop pressuring her. Let her come to a decision in her own time.
Find another friend who rides. Put them on the back for practice. Another person who rides will better understand what the driver is doing. |

Two-wheelers can be more emotional than logical, somewhat like guns. I'm not sure how I would feel being a passenger and having no control.

Where is this trade in place someone was talking about? To her fears, opinions, and practical sense judgements. Maybe if I saw you ride, I wouldn't want to ride behind you either? You don't own her, and I would suggest you just go enjoy riding and leave her alone, as you might get more trouble out of it than it's worth... |

getting your better half on the bike
My better half is afraid to join me on my scooter. I even purchased a second scooter hoping to change his mind. I don't pressure him because in the back of my mind I always have this fear that
"if something happened to him I'd never forgive myself" ...and I realize if people are scared or hesitant, they are more likely to make a mistakes and hurt themselves. I totally understand the frustrated desire to share what you love with your loved one but you can't push it. Good luck |

I'm reminded of my experiences trying to convince partners to embrace my love of downhill skiing. I'm a former instructor, and understand the merits of the rule against trying to teach family members-- Even so, my best efforts at low-key, patient persuasion were just not effective in recruiting reluctant significant others into my chosen high-speed diversion.
If you're not an adrenaline junkie, well.... you just aren't! End of story. As for giving someone else full control of my fate by riding pillion, may I quote the fabulous button produced by the San Francisco Scooter Girls? I don't ride bitch. --Deborah 8) |

My wife has a few rules....
1. She doesn't ride with new riders. (If you weave, honk ,wave like you are on a parade? Be prepared for the fury to be unleashed.) 2. She doesn't like ME riding behind her. 3. She does not ride in groups anymore. 4. She does not ride BITCH ever. (One exception: she enjoyed the cushy seat of my 71 Triumph...but other than that? never). 5. She does not like being forced to ride or told what to do. (that is why we are married I am certain.........) she likes to be in complete control & riding pillion gives that up. Bonus for me as I get to remove the rear footpegs on whatever motorcycle I get & put on a solo seat. (which always looks better IMO.) I would suggest letting her decide if she would like to even ride at all. It definitely isn't for everyone...Contrary to popular belief. And if you crash with her on the back?....I cant even imagine the fight after that episode. My wife would kill me if I wasn't dead already.... |

And have shown that you take her concerns seriously. |

You're not alone. Some things are the way they are, and that's the way it is. If and when she wants to ride she will, but it needs to be her choice. If she has interest she will ask eventually.
When I had my MC's, my wife and I would ride 2-up occasionally. That was 10yrs and 2 kids ago. 20+yrs ago she would ride 2-up frequently. I had my scooter for 8 wks now and she has stated the she will NOT ride. She has NO interest, zero, zilch, nada. Her riding days are in the past; safety, parenthood, other things to do all take priority. I will not ask her and I do not expect her to ask to go for a ride. I can say that I am a little disappointed, but also a little relieved. I do not need the stress of riding with a passenger or the guilt of anything happening. |
