I know it is not a big deal, but for the life of me I can not figure out why in the USA they have the mph tiny and the main numbers are in KPH.

I have an 09 and thought perhaps they would finally have a US spec. speedo, but no such luck!

It does seem a bit strange. Perhaps they didn't anticipate high enough sales in the US to bother with creating a separate dial for that market?

On the up-side, when the US finally gets around to converting to the metric system, MP3 riders will be set.

Oh don't get me started... Laughing emoticon

After awhile you'll probably find yourself not even noticing the big red stuff up top and your eyes will just go straight to the inside numbers.

'bout time we joined the rest of the world, especially now that the almighty dollar isn't quite as mighty as in the past. Working in the scientific community, I've thought in metric for over 25 years and it's second nature now. It really is an easier system once you get to know it.

The problem lies in the fact that our brains are "calibrated" while young. We have an inherent sense of measurements - sort of like muscle memory if you play and instrument or participate in a sport that technique matters (golf, tennis). Learning a new system is a piece of cake - Feeling the system is another matter...

99% agree but would argue that even as an adult, when immersed in a system you pick it up fairly quickly. Spend a few weeks in Europe and you'll see. The temperature thing was the hardest for me to get the hang of even though I've worked in labs for over 10 years and kept several temperature logs- all in Centigrade... Well... That and learning how to drink beer in deciliters... Laughing emoticon

After the fist 200 miles or so I stopped noticing the KPH markings. I don't think I even focus on them any more when I (rarely) check my speed.

Huh...I did just the opposite. I stopped looking for the MPH and instead started reading the KPH.

I just look at my stuck-on bits of tape. Much easier to see at a glance.

I don't have this problem on my scooter, but when we were in Canada (in the car) I was having a hell of a time with the conversion thing. The speeding wasn't 1/2 bad, but trying to figure out how far away the next exit was was a pain in the ass. I finally downloaded a tool into my phone to help me. I could do the math, but I wanted a faster response.

I agree, but am learning to cope very well.

About the accuracy...
My buddy and I checked our speedometers, and according to his BMW bike, mine always read about 5 mph faster than his speedo.

Wow.

We just use ordinary glasses and aluminum cans out here.

Cheers

Proper man-sized 20floz pint glasses here. No cans thank-you, cask conditioned ale only, from a hand-pump or gravity fed.

I stuck on bits of tape also. I'd settle for "readable."
