I just exchanged a couple of emails with Leo at Laminar Lip. After he emailed me saying they probably would never have one for the 500 with Givi windscreen ... well he gave me permission to post the email and pictures:
Quote:
No problem on posting there, you should probably resize the photos for quicker downloads though. The UNOFFICIAL buzz for making one for the stock shield (the black ABS plastic one) is that we probably won't. It's small, and we're questioning whether the 3M Dual Locks will adhere onto the ABS plastic itself. That might change later however..We're still looking for someone local with the 250/400 with the regular (non-ABS) shield to come by though, maybe you can find someone on the forum. We'll cut them a deal..

Safe and pleasant rides,
Leo

Fantastic! I had all but given up hope on getting the dirty air up a couple of inches. The helmet buffeting was killing me.

Do you mind if I post this email and pics in the modernvespa.com <http> MP3 forum? We're all talking about it right now.

Thanks again and look for my order soon

Hello Again David,

Wouldn't you know it? Right after I answer your e-mail someone
local with the exact same bike and shield shows up to our door to
figure out what will fit. Anyways, the results are to use the LIP

that you can make certain you have the same shield...

Safe and pleasant rides,

Here's one of the 2 pictures he sent.

I'll be purchasing one ASAP and will post results back here.

mmm, so no drilling, no holes....but it sounds like he isn't sure the lip will stick well to this screen??

personally i would like to have mine come on and off...so i don't mind some drill holes...i only would like some extra wind moved up when going over 75 mph...which isn't all that often

so, regular shield for my daily commute, then put on the lip when i do my 500 mile highway rides to visit my daughter (a few times a year)

i'd buy one if they had a model that went on and off easily

g

wonder why then didn't put on a smoked version....maybe it wasn't in stock?

He's referring to the rough black plastic on the stock shield. These things are made specifically to stick to the smooth plastic used by Givi and Fabbri and any other "see through" windscreen

ah...thanks...my reading skills need work

thanks

looks good...maybe i can rig it to come on and off...

have another long trip at the end of the month...will see how i do with the 85 mph riding from phoenix to albuquerque...if it is really tiring, perhaps i;ll grab one for the next trip...but i, personally wouldn't want one on all the time...don't need it for city riding and it pulls back some from the looks

I ran down there this morning and had them find one that fits. Do not ask for a ride report uey as I only rode 4 miles back home on the streets and did not get a chance to take it on a ride. Last night my wife and I went to Disneyland and took te scooter, we rode home on the freeway doing 70-75 the whole way. It ran great. I will report on the Lip tomorrow I hope.

Hey brlowe I love the look of your Givi windscreen and the lip. What Givi screen is that? Any update on the the wind buffeting? I went on the highway for the first time today and the wind buffeting was unbelievable. I cannot imagine riding for a long time with all that wind in my face an pushing on my chest.

And how did you mount your GPS? I really want to mount the GPS in my line of sight instead of on the handle bars. Your setup is what i am looking to do. Thanks for any info.

Awesome! I was hoping the person who owned it would speak up. I'll be ordering one tonight but you'll probably beat me to the report. Still, 2 opinions are better than one.

I don't suppose there are any 250/400 riders, who have the Fabbri medium windshield installed, who live near Santa Ana, CA. I would like to know which Lip fits best on this setup, and the guys at Laminar said they need to see one in person for determining the correct model.

Ok, It fits
Has anyone tried it out yet?
If so, maybe you can let us know if the lip actually works with the Givi 500 screen.
Does it deflect the wind blast over your head?
A short review would be great.

Mine is waiting at home for me. I'll install it tomorrow, and use it for my 90 mile (round trip) commute on Thursday, then report back.

At least, I hope that's the plan. You never know with these things.

Yes definitely the smoke. It's actually quite dark too. I'll post some pics when it's installed later today.

So far though, the instructions are very easy to read but detailed enough so that anyone could do it correctly the first time. They even include a little blurb about why they chose to use the 3M locking discs and even point out the pros and cons of them.

Ok so I have had mine on for s few days now, here is what I can say about it. My helmet is still up in the wind (I'm 6'0") but the air is smoother. It is quieter and my flip up helmet sucks, when I close the face shield it gets louder in my helmet. Now the air blast is no longer right at my face, I can ride around town without my glasses and my face shield up with no problem (no I do not do this often). I can hear the music in my headset much better now too. This weekend I'm going to put washers under the top mounts on the shield to raise it up a little. I still need about 2" more to get into that quiet zone. The air is smoother.

Well that is my unprofessional .02 worth. All I need now is a seat and saddlebags and I'm ready for some touring.

It is glued on with 3m Disc locks, but is removable. This requires some explaining tho...

The 3M disc locks are 2 pieces. The back of each piece is glued to the lip and your windscreen respctively. But the locks are suprer strong velcro on their opposing sides. This velcro locks together very tightly and must be removed by wedging a butter knife in it to break the grip a bit and then them apart. Honestly, the instructions recommend using a butter knife

You can see the top velcro in the pics here, and the glued part is underneath each of those discs.

http://www.laminarlip.com/mounts.php

Of course you would still have 4 small discs glued to your screen should you take the lip of temporarily.

I was skeptical of their strength but I drove 80mph with a pretty good side wind for 45 miles today and it didn't even move. I'll have a full report once I get home, with pics.

Haha, ya beat me by 10 minutes.... I got home late last night, went grocery shopping, cooked dinner, and after a couple of glasses of wine was ready for bed.

Ok full report:

I placed the lip on as high as it would go. It came with its disc locks pre-attached so the only thing I had to worry about was where to glue them to my screen. I went high.

At 80mph I noticed very little difference. It's still loud, and I'm still getting helmet buffeting, only higher up the helmet. I'll also be trying to add some washers to get it up higher.

At lower speeds it was a little better. But the real benefit with my setup was the cleaner airflow coming off of the screen. The lip is a tad wider than my screen and it makes for a wider comfort zone. Also, I live near the ocean so there is always wind. And I commute north and south so it's always a cross wind. This wind would usually come off my windscreen in a very turbulent manner and would literally rip open my velcro collar on my jacket. That is completely solved with the lip. It totally removed all of the air hitting my neck area. Very nice.

I also noticed when I first installed my Givi screen that the bike was a little squirrelly at high speed ~80mph. The lip completely solved that too. I think this is more of the cross wind issue. The lip just smooths all of that air out.

I did also notice that the "quiet zone" I can tuck into is substantially higher. Meaning I just have to lower my helmet a bit to get in that zone. That means I'm getting close to my comfort zone with these mods.

I'll post some pics of me sitting on it later. I need a camerawoman for that

Much darker than the Givi but I didn't notice on the road.

theoretically, if you add some washers to the top bolts you change the aerodynamic properties of the screen, making it steeper for the air, which should push the air up higher.

Theoretically of course

The trip was a blast or I should say no blast, just a little tapping on the head and a slight shove of wind from behind.

In practice here, on every Piaggio screen I've had. Just 4mm does the trick. But that's for my body build/height of course, there is no 'solution' for everyone.

What about...
Just some speculation, but what do you think the effect of a laminar lip would be on a Givi or Fabbri screen for the 250? Do you think a medium screen with a lip would be better than getting a tall screen? Most of the posts on the medium screens for the 250 have said it moves the wind from your chest to somewhere on your forehead(for the avg. 6ftish person). I would prefer to have a screen that moves the wind completely off me, so that I can install it and ride with a skid lid, goggles, and foam face mask. Any ideas for the lip on a 250?

Jimc, I tried the washer trick and noticed that it really makes the air coming of the windscreen much dirtier (more turbulent). Did you get any results like this?

I've got about 6mm of washers in mine. I'm wondering if I should try less AND more just to see how it affects the airflow.
