I finally found one I wanted - BZZZZ. It had been issued previously, but had not be renewed in 18 months. Two days after I sumitted my request, though, the powers that be at DMV called and said it could be misconstrued as drug related, and therefore I cannot have it. It might offend someone. I'm very disappointed.

Challenge the decision! You have nothing to lose!

I was turned down on a plate in CA years ago, but was granted it once I explained what it meant.

If you explain you're putting the plate on a Vespa - "wasp" - and that wasps make a buzzing noise they may reconsider.

If the local office can't help, write directly to the head of your State Department of Motor Vehicles.

The application has a part where you explain what it means. I wrote, "This is for my Vespa, which in Italian means wasp, and BZZZZ is what a wasp sounds like." So they knew what I meant. I never thought of this other message. They said they're really cracking down drug and sex references, so I don't think they'll reconsider. My state does have a really bad drug problem, and they are trying to get rid of the meth labs, but I really think this plate is harmless.

LOL Nah. Mine is personalized too, but that isn't it. Believe it or not, that plate above is available! Good chance it'll get turned down.

Ok, here are their guidelines:

The Department will reject requests for any personalized license plate that:
- Expresses contempt, ridicule, or superiority of race, ethnic heritage, religion, gender, or political affiliation.
- Contains any connotation that is sexual, vulgar, derogatory, profane, or obscene.
- Contains a direct or indirect reference to drug or drug paraphernalia, or a gang.
- Makes a defamatory reference to a person or group.
- Is determined by the department to be inappropriate

So my request failed on the third point, I guess.

There was a fleet of contractor/work trucks with the plates numbered sequentially.... 1 inches, 2 inches etc....the one I saw read 10 inches. I laughed my arse off. A few weeks later, I saw a Red RX7 with the plate RECTION

As in "erection?" Okay, here's the connection. RX7 is made by Mazda. Mazda is a Japanese car. Maybe the driver was a Japanese politician...get it? Election? Bad joke.

Contains a direct or indirect reference to drug or drug paraphernalia, or a gang.

What drug are you referencing? Bzzz might be a side effect but is not a drug.

Ask them to find someone who speaks english to review you plate request.

I love that! It makes me think of John Belushi. Wow - talk about a drug reference! No, they won't give me BZZZZ because they think it's a drug reference. Also BUZZZZ was available, but she said it would be the same thing.

WASPZZ is available, but it's not as subtle, and no telling, it might be construed as a drug reference, too. No wait, she said they're starting to not allow brand names either!

They're taking all the fun out of it.

I was behind a truck today that had confederate flags painted on the tailgate and the license plate was CSA REB (Confederate States of America Rebel)... Like I said in an earlier post, you can do lots of things in my state without much trouble.

Disclaimer: I'm not judging the people of my state, just this one guy in particular.

I would still write to the head of your State DMV to challenge the decision.

Often a lower level employee will make a bad judgement call...and this is one. I don't think it was rejected for a drug reference but rather because a low-level employee "determined [it] to be inappropriate ."

In your letter say how much you appreciate the state's effort to crack down on - oh wait, don't use the work "crack" - effort to eliminate plates with drug references, but that your plate meaning is directly tied to the brand of your vehicle and has no relationship to drugs at all, in any way. Attach a copy of the rejection letter...and information about Vespa.

Come on...start typing. You have nothing to lose!

I heard a story about a woman who recently got a divorce and was super stoked about it. She bought a house and a new car and got a personalized license plate that read "A New Slate." It ended up being "ANSLT."

If you don't get it, I ain't gonna explain it.

+1, Id ask for that DMV employee to be drug tested.

This guy here in Toronto named JEHAD tried to get a vanity plate in like December 2001 so they denied it because he wanted a plate that said JEHAD and they denied it on the grounds that considering what had just happened somebody could road rage on him and bad things could happen.

He sued saying he should be able to use his name on his plate and he won.

This is true. I had problem getting a temporary tag from one of the DMV agents and needs all sorts of extra paper work (more then bill of sale) because I bought from a privet individual, that would have been a pain to get. I just went the next day and got the "new" teller that was stationed right next to her. She didn't even hint for any additional paperwork and I got my temp tag.

Try someone else if your able too!

It's ironic they reject personalized plates that may contain any connotation that is sexual, however they can issue new plates like this one. This was the actual plate issued for my Honda. I took it off when it got totaled. I doubt I'll ever get another plate as cool as this one!
