OK.

I may have screwed things up. After putting on the malossi drive belt, I torqued torqued everything down as in the manual.

I test rode my ET4. It's making a harsh sound. It ran for a little bit and then stopped running. It started again but quit soon after.

WTF. I did everything according to the book. Now what?

the sound. Harsh, metallic, louder than the exhaust.
Help. Vince

Take it apart again and look for anything out of the ordinary.
Did you re-use the Variator Nut?

Yes. As I recall, the order of parts placed on the shaft were:

variator, collar (cylindrical metal tube), a large washer, the finned plate, the washer that fits behind the mating plate, then the variator nut was torqued down to 60 foot pounds.

Thats my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Hell, I'll have to wait until tomorrow. No light outside and the ET4 is parked in front of my apartment. Hopefully, I'll get home in enough time to take it apart again.

The Haynes manual covers several models of piaggio bikes and sometimes isn't detailed enough for your specific model. Damn, I thought I had it right.

Thanks for the reply.

Hmm. Happened to me once. I hadn't seated the outer pulley properly and the washer before the nut was interfering with the splines on the crankshaft.

The result was that the fins on the outer pulley were rubbing on the transmission case. Make sure that you seat the belt deep into the clutch pullies before you torque up the variator side.

The variator nut is a one time only use nut. Replace with new and re-check all else as previously suggested.

Tonight, I'll take the bus down to Motorsport again and get a new variator nut. The sound I'm getting DOES sound like metal - on - metal; the transmission case is being turned into an amplifier!

Likely, I've not got the parts seated well. I'll check the clutch belt pulley and try to seat the belt deeper into it.

HOW? do I get the belt deeper into the pulley?

Thank you for the advice and taking time out of your day to address my incompetent mechanical abilities!

The "outer pulley" you refer to... I'm assuming this is the clutch pulley or?

Also. The order in which the parts go on the spline just didn't seem right to me: Variator assembly with rollers; Collar cylinder; that washer that fits between the collar and the finned plate - this is the one that seems to be trouble - it seems to me that the belt would get caught on the washer's edge and become cut up; then the finned plate, the washer between the finned plate and the mating plate; finally the mating plate and the variator nut.

Did I miss something or get something in the wrong order? I thought I had the order memorized...
