NO. 947 REFORM SCHOOL FOR JUVENILE OFFENDERS (FRED C. NELLES SCHOOL)

The March 11, 1889 Act of the California Legislature authorized the establishment of a school for juvenile offenders. Dedication and laying of cornerstone was done by Governor R. W. Waterman on February 12, 1890. Officially opened as 'Whittier State School' for boys and girls on July 1, 1891. Girls were transferred in 1916 and only boys have been in residence since that time. Renamed 'Fred C. Nelles School for Boys' in 1941 ('For Boys' was dropped around 1970). This school has been in continuous operation serving the needs of juvenile offenders since 1891.

That's the one I was thinking of ScooterGirlinAL! It's way off the main road so I think I would attract a lot of attention by riding up in there. Maybe I won't get hassled I'll try to find time to ride over there today.

Oh well, I guess I'll sit here on my scooter and make vroom vroom sounds.

Cool -- some parts of it are open again! Last time I went past they had the whole place fenced off for a long-overdue $111 million dollar environmental restoration project. They're dredging the contaminated lake bottom, re-lining it, removing weeds and invasive species, and so on. I look forward to seeing it when it's finally cleaned up -- they're even suggesting that it might be safe to swim in again by the time they're done (it was at least nominally safe* for swimming in the early 1970s).

*Then again, it was downhill from the adjacent oil refinery, downstream of a wastewater treatment facility, and caught the runoff from a golf course. "Safe" was relative in those days...

Go toss a bucket of water in there and get a photo before it evaporates. It's still a natural lake, dried up or not.

I would say no. Just as Mission Bay is a natural body of water. "Lake" generally means fresh water. The Elkhorn Slough -- http://www.elkhornslough.org/ -- Elkhorn Slough is a Tidal Wetland ... Elkhorn Slough's salt marshes.

I found a lake so the guys in the East had a chance. Lake Tahoe would good. Most of the "lakes" in California are man made.

Ha yeah it used to be called Dunn's Lake in fact it drains into the St. Johns river via Dunn's creek. I cross it everyday on my commute.

Think about it. Street musicians are really a city thing which leaves out a bunch of us scattered hicks.
