I picked up this non-running Rally 180 and am finally getting to working on it. It's a bit of a mess, but it appears to be nice and original, just neglected. Some supposed scooter shop in Orlando worked on it before I got it, managed to lose the airbox cover, routed the gas and oil through the air bellows hole in the frame and threw the air bellows away

Anyway, I spent some free time the last two weekends seeing what was what and have now rebuilt the carb, replaced a leaky fuel tap, rerouted the oil and gas lines through the correct frame holes and viola, it started up!

For all of you Rally/vintage gurus, a couple of questions. The main jet is a whopping 160, which I assume is WAY too large - though where to go from here? It also won't shift, though I did a search and it seems like maybe I should see if the clutch plates are stuck together. I'd like to run it around the block and try to gauge how much work needs to be done to the engine.

The paint is shot, someone tried to rattle can parts of it, so I'm researching the rally 180 paint colors. If anyone has a usable paint code (meaning not the Max Meyer codes) or good pictures of the Rally yellows I'd really appreciate it.

I also need the airbox cover - I called a couple of shops but nobody I called had them.

PPG Paints conversions to the Max Meyer codes here:

NOTE Click on the chart to download the PDF.

If this information is correct it's very cool.

good luck.

Nice scoot and nice projekt. I am doing the same on a 1975 rally 200.

The airbox-cover from a PX 200 should be the same and fit to your rally.

I think you're reading the air corrector number, not the main jet. The main jet is the tiny tiny little brass piece at the BOTTOM of the 2" long main jet stack. You're probably reading the number of the TOPMOST piece.

Your jet should be a 108 or 110 or something ( i'm guessing ). But the 160-ish air corrector was used on my SS180, so it makes sense it's the same on your rally 180.

Thanks everyone for the help. Eric, I'll check the jet when I pull it again - I did see a number at the bottom but I couldn't easily read it. I'll try in better light.

Woodenhead, thanks for the link - I had looked there before, but the chart seems to go up only to 1970 and my rally is a 71. It's still the best chart I've seen though so unless people post their yellow vespas I'll start there.

A great tip from Randolph at Garner's Scooters about loosening the clutch plates worked. I started by pulling in the clutch and rocking it back and forth until I could turn it to first then rocked it some more. No luck, and I played with it for at least 15 minutes. My driveway is on a small incline so I managed to turn it to second and rocked it again. All of a sudden I'm rolling down my driveway! The plates were free

Started it up, put my helmet on and went around the block. It actually seemed to shift really well. I didn't get it past third, but it found the gears easily and nothing slipped, so I'm pleased. The only problem was stopping - there are basically no brakes. I'll be tackling those this weekend and update then.
