I have a scoot with a 2003 ET4 Leader type engine (carb - not injection) that has had a crank shaft meltdown!!! Crying or Very sad emoticon

Can I swap it for an engine from a 2007 GILERA RUNNER 125? This has injection and electricals are a little different...

Surely as long as it's connected to a battery it'll work?!? Or are these things getting way too snazzy for my little brain...

Any ideas?
Cheers!

wayyy too snazzy.

basically you'd need the entire wiring harness and engine mgmt. components, and then the proper gas tank and what not.

basically, a huge pain in the arse.

just find another motor from a breaker for a plug-n-play or replace the crank and be done with it.

Since when did the Runner 125 have fuel injection?

This engine still wouldn't fit as it is a liquid cooled version of the leader, same as in the GT125 and GT200.

Hmmmm... Well my current engine is liquid cooled - so from the mechanical side of things it'll fit - It's just the electric side I'm not sure....

You have a liquid cooled ET4?
Do you mean a liquid cooled GT125 or
an air cooled ET4?
Either way; I think if you have to ask it's probably too complex to do yourself.

It's actually an Aprilia Atlantic with a Piaggio ET4 engine...

It's not like I want to change a car engine or something.

yes.... i have an idea.... how about you take the advise that was offered to heart?

i'm not trying to be a smart ass, but really, if you can't figure it out on your own or with the information provided then it'd probably be best if you didn't undertake such a job.

Looks like everyone here only gets their fingers dirty handing over cash to their local dealer when a problem occurs...

Good thing I didn't ask about torque settings or splitting a crank case!
Jeeeesh.

the torque settings are in the FSM, but if you'd like for me to spoon feed them to you i'd be more than happy to do so in my spare time.

I guess what I really wanted to know was what is the difference between the engine from around 2003 and a new one - electrics wise? As I have no experience with the new ones ignition...

Gimme a GS anyday, but for now I'm stuck with a twist and go, with no go!

You might want to try the GTS owners club forum.
They're UK based, so would have more experience with these bikes.

I would think it would be cheaper just to fix the crank on your existing engine rather than swap another one in with all the odd pieces that aren't going to match up. Modern Vespas are expensive machines to repair. It might even be cheaper just to sell yours for parts, and buy another used ET4. I don't know what it costs to replace the crank at a decent mechanic.

I've been quoted £250 for the crank assembly PLUS 2 hours labour!!!

I'm going on Sunday to look at the other engine in question (off a 2007 Gilera Runner VX) - it's only done 7000 kilometers and all for £175!!!

So I'll have a close look at the thing and try to get all the electrics thrown in too... He chap said he'd give me the money back if it don't work, so we'll see...

et4 leaders come up on e-bay quite often, from about £170 to £250, I know you think we are all stupid, but i think you might struggle to get another type of engine in there. You'd need all the electrics cdi etc to get it going. If you can well much respect to you.

£250 for the crank + 2 hours labour is good, the retial price of a new crank is over £250, plus you need new gaskets and seals as well, as for 2 hours labour they must work fast!

Good luck

Yeah! I guess that makes me feel a bit better with regards to the cost, but the two hours is probably because it's already out of the frame and most of it is off the crank case...

I'll see on Sunday what the other engine looks like - I spoke to the chap and it apparently has a carb and (not injection as the web mentioned for a 2007 model - http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/gilera_runner_vx125_2007.php ) but has a transponder in the key (Huh!?!). Plus he hasn't had it running so good chance his electrics are crappy anyway...

So I'll most likely use this as a base to put my electrics into as mine had a good spark, just a crappy crank...

Frankenstein scoot!

I'll let you all know how it goes.
Cheers!

One of the Runners may be a two stroke and I'm not sure about the Hexagon, but if they are liquid cooled 125 they are probably the same engine. They run different rollers and clutches and often different carbs, but generally they are the same. Maybe watch the overall gearing too.

The US does not have an equivalent engine, although I believe the 200 in the GT is a liquid cooled leader?

Well... I got the engine - less than 6000 miles on the clock and all the electrics and contacts are the same as my old one - So far so good!! Nice and shiny too.....

Now I just need time to connect it all up and give it a go...

The carb is different - a lower profile one but all connections look the same so it should be a simple task - will let you chaps know, hopefully by the weekend it'll be ready for it's MOT and on it's way to getting back on the road...

The only thing I can see so far is the one side will need replacing with my current one as the exhaust has different screw points and the disc brake is on the other side - I might just leave the current one as is... Need more fiddling to decide.
