So I am intending to pop my new speedo cable in my P200 soon. The problem is I am undereducated in this matter. I got a complete set (sheath and inner cable), but am under the distinct impression that the inner cable needs to be greased in order to get a proper lifespan. If this is correct, what is the easiest method to grease the bugger up?

Thanks!

I prefer not to use grease because it can harden up.

I take the inner out, coil it, dip it in oil, then reinsert into the inner.

When in the bike I take a bit of fuel line, force it on the outer, then use an oil gun to force the oil through till I can see the oil coming out onto whatever I put under the botom of the outer.

these work great for clutch/throttle and brake cables not speedos though

make a paper cone and tape it on the speedo cable and just pour 2 ounces of reg motor oil in it and let gravity take over for about 2 hrs then install

No need for lube clamps or waiting right now. His speedo isn't installed in the bike, so just take the inner out and dip.

Just blather the last 12 inches in grease, and put it back into the inner sleeve. The problem area with these cables is where it bends below the mudguard and feeds into the hub, also make sure there is plenty of grease on the squared off end that slots into the worm drive. Mine always snapped there. A tip for securing the circular retaining washer that bolts into the hub is to get a mate to pull the front brake on and push down on the handlebars, this will give you more than plenty of room to tighten the bolt!!

doesn't the service manual call for oil?

I saw a great way to go.
Get a small ziplock bag snip off enough of a corner to slip the cable tape it up, fill with oil hang above a can let drain thru when It leaks out the other end you are done.
Remove bag let drain a little so it's not to messy.
I think this way sounds better than dipping the cable, all of the inside gets
a nice coat of oil not just the cable wire.

Consider using ATF--very slippery, non-gunky, lasts just about forever in cables.
