Curious, do you ride in windy conditions? Have you ever been "blown-over"? Any special tips one should be aware of when riding in windy conditions?
Thanks!!

Windy riding
Been in some strong wind, did not throw me off course, but headwinds can slow you down. The noise is scary, but strong winds have not been a problem except fear. I have not been in a hurricane or serious storm.

We get some pretty good blows here in the Antelope Valley. Don't really feel the effects until I'm above about 45 or so. Most of my driving is between 50 and 65. When looking ahead down the road, it feels like I'm being blown all over the lane, but a quick glance to the ground immediately in front of me shows that I'm tracking a pretty straight line. The feeling is more disconcerting than anything. Sure does feel like I'll tip over one of those strong gusts. I've discovered that if I hold the handlebars looser than normal, it doesn't feel so uncontrolled.

Had a few windy rides.
Definitely, a "looser" bar grip makes the ride more comfortable. Don't try and "fight it", so much as riding with it. |

It was fairly windy in Seattle this weekend. I was out riding and the winds kicked up to at least 40mph. In addition to the already offered advice, here are a few other things to consider:
- watch out for flying debris. I was hit in the leg with what appeared to be a piece of someone's car bumper (likely an accident remnant). It didn't hurt but be ready so you don't have a panic response. - I noted that many car drivers were really into watching stoplights and signs going horizontal as the wind blew, and they essentially stopped paying attention to the road and others. Be ready for idiot moves. The power was out along one busy stretch of road and everyone seemed react differently. Some stopped at each dark light, some sped up, it was basically mayhem. - I was riding in an urban area with lots of tall buildings. Be ready for the gusts that hit you sideways when you cross intersections. - Try and chew some gum so you don't clench your jaw. It will also help you relax a bit and not hold the grips so tight. - The headwinds sucked but the tailwinds were really fun. |

It is the equinox at the moment, traditionally a very windy time of year. It is blowing like 50 thousand a*#!holes here at the moment and I just rode home over the harbour bridge. I find it is an enjoyable challenge and not particularly frightening exept in extreme conditions where the winds are over 50 knots.
I have had the biggest wind 'fright' from an empty low-loader that had its ramps folded up and was travelling at 100kph. The 'suck' was unbelievable I agree that you should not ride tight but go with the flow and be prepared to correct against any gusts by gently countersteering as they push against you. That said, I see you are on a 50 Fly. My GT weighs in at 135kg so it sits well on the road. You may want to load your riding jacket pockets with rocks Good luck. |

Thank you for the replies. I appreciate hearing about your windy experiences. I live in Nevada and the wind blows quite a bit here!
