Hi,
I recently changed the transmission oil on a '99 pre-leader et4. I noticed after a couple of days leaking transmission oil after I had been for a ride. On closer inspection it came from a small hole near the top of the transmission. SEE PHOTO. I assumed that this was a breather hole for the transmission. It is still leaking everytime I ride it. Should there be something in the hole to stop the oil leaking and only let air out, or is it that I have just put too much oil in?

I hope someone can help

Thanks

I'm afraid I can't answer your question specifically. Genie might be able to look at hers and tell you if there is supposed to be a plug in there. I know that the level is sorted out by the use of two plugs, one is a filler and the other is a drain. The oil level should be level with the threads on the fill plug.

doug, I filled mine with the amount it should have rather than to the bottom of threads of the filler hole, so maybe it has to much, leaks more when you go faster, i guess its sloshes about more. I would think it needs some sort of breather hole to allow air out when it gets hot. The hole is ment to be there but not threaded or anything. Hope geine see this thread, if not I'll pm her. I cant see anything listed on the spare parts list.

Thanks for your input

I am sure that this is probably what has happened. If you take the top filler out then you will achieve the correct level.

I am sure the GTS has a breather as well although there is tubing on that! You can see the tubing quite clearly on this photo...

i'm embarrassed to say that both the girls bums are too filthy to accurately determine the existence of a drain hole, or any kind of hole in that region

there's no mention in the haynes manual of a breather hole but i'll go out tomorrow with a scrubber and see if i can unearth one. if you filled beyond the level of the threads on the filler plug chances are you've overfilled it.

a quick look has confirmed that both betty and wilma have the 'drainage hole' ... but i still don't know if oil should be shooting out of it. i'll be seeing my mechanic on sunday and i'll ask him.

Thanks for looking, when i was rebuilding scooty i saw the hole and guessed it was a breather hole. I work with gearboxes so its actually something i know about and not just read! You need a hole for air to get out when it and the oil heats up and expands, if its sloshing out it must be over filled and sloshing too much. Normally there is some sort of valve in there to stop water getting in, maybe its internal?

I'll check the level oil this weekend

c. Each Vespa model uses a different amount of transmission oil. If you put in too much, it comes out the bleeder tube. It also may get into the ventilation system, and is a mess to clean out, requires disassembly.
d. The easy way to fill it is to get an oil "squirter can". Put in the oil until it's full (by checking with dip stick), and count the number of squirts it required so you'll know next time.
