Hi everyone,

Thanks in advance for your help.

I was riding my 500 today when I noticed the check engine light was on. I started to slow down and pull over and it went off. For the rest of the ride (15 miles) it did not come on again. Is it OK to just watch it and see if it happens again or do I have an issue?

At the time I was doing about 60-65 and it was very windy. I don't know if that would have anything to do with it.

By the way, the ride was fabulous!! 70 miles through mountain roads, lots of curves, lots of fun. The gas mileage doesn't seem to be very good. I don't think I'm getting over 40 mpg. Maybe because it's still new (about 200 miles on it now).

Welcome to the forum Lisa and congratulations on your 500. Don't know what could have caused the light to go on but in this case, no news is good news. If it come on again, I would take it back to the dealer and tell them it happened more than once.

That question is way above my pay grade, but others like Jimc could give you an answer on that one.

I have had the engine check light come on on my 400 several times . It would always go off when I let off on the gas. I took it to my dealer and they said that it was an event but not an active code so there was nothing to fix. If your engine check light comes on and stays on take it back to the dealer. If the engine check light comes on and then goes off a little later, it's just an event. This event could be caused by several things, bad gas ect. The key thing is if it stays on get it back to the dealer, if not ride it like you stole it.

Yes. It has an ECU that they can hook a diagnostic tool to at the dealer to check for problems.

The problem that you are having will not show up on the diagnostic tool. You may be having an issue with the O2 sensor. There still may be some "newness" build-up on it and it will eventually burn itself clean. If you are not experiencing any changes in engine, engine rpm, idle, or any other "hmmm somethings not right" other than the light, just keep on riding and enjoy.

Head winds and lack of a full windscreen would give you low MPGs.

The ECU stores error codes even if a problem resolves itself.

The ECU does store error codes, but only those codes that produce a solid light, or flashing light on the led. That is my understanding.... instances such as an engine light on lisa's machine won't be logged.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I'm going to ride it to work for the first time today. A bit nervous about that because it's through some traffic. 30 miles one way.

The nervousness only makes it that much more fun.
