Gased up today for $2.95 gal.

Won't be long before they start crankin out those SUV's again.

My stoock portfolio has crapped out but at least I'm saving a couple of bucks on gas.

Yeah I have been saying for a while that I expect gas to be around $2.00 by August next year, my guess is we will see a separating of the "wheat from the chaff" soon with a lot of riders turning in their 2 wheels for 4 as it becomes MUCH cheaper to gas up the ole cage.

On the other hand, the press is reporting that GM and Ford are both about to fail (which I personally doubt), large banks have ceased extending credit to car dealers, and you can't swing a dead cat without hitting someone moaning about not having any available credit. So I suspect most people will be driving whatever they have now for a a good long time, regardless of what it is.

I also doubt many people will want to be seen consuming wastefully during this mess, especially with their transpo.

I predicted back in July that gas would be around $2.85 a gallon by July '09, maybe even mentioned that here somewhere on MV. Looks like I was way too pessimistic.

in the past thirty years, (since the price of gas has mattered) it ALWAYS drops right before the election....

I agree with the dropping before an election. However, one of the minor factors for deciding to buy a Vespa this summer was that I was afraid gas was going to be $6/gallon by September.

My bad.

Supply and demand?

The economy is in the tank, people are driving less. Businesses are delivering less product. Less power is being used.

The price goes down.

Or is it just because summer is over?

Or... Oh, the hell with it - Just insert your favorite conspiracy theory here:

There's another reason. OPEC is hearing the rumblings over here, and they are seeing that we're getting serious about weaning ourselves from foreign energy. They'd like us to go back to sleep, and forget all about the need for energy independence.

You know, I have heard that Elvis was pumping gas someplace in Michigan (why is it always Michigan) and who would have more influence on prices than the king!

Personally, I blame the Norwegians.... no one's blamed anything on the Norwegians lately... except of course the Swedes. But they're laying low before they invade Finland and take over Iceland's economy... so who's to believe them...

It's also all those stock speculators that were short selling gas over the summer. They were banking on the price going up, the more it went up the more they made. As with anything it got to a peak and then once it leveled off it was no longer lucrative to trade/sell based on higher barrel costs.

Now there isn't as much interest in short selling and barrel speculation as you can make more cash buying up almost any stock on the cheap, hold it until the market corrects, then make a killing.

The speculators were what really killed/drove up the gas prices over the summer.
