Son Quinn's architecture class is heading to NYC next Tues-Sun. They're staying at the hostel at 891 Amsterdam Ave., and looking for advice on where starving students should eat. Cheap, ethnic, and accessible by public transit is good!

He also wants to know where he can pick up Ben Sherman and Fred Perry swag!

Pretty much any place that looks like crap will give him solid eats on the cheap. Broad generalization but somewhat true.

He'll be on the Upper West side. Tell him to go south (and east), on foot or any train line, and he'll find a ton of stuff (shopping and eating).

I'm a born and bred NY'er (Brooklyn) so I fully believe in the worse the place looks the better the food usually is.

Just go to soho. lower broadway. there are a zillion places to find stuff like that on broadway below houston.
