ARRRGGGGG I just got my first iPod and am hating iTunes. I knew why I did not like Apple, it just does stuff I don't even want it to do. And if I tell it to do something, it goes right back and does it a different way. I am majorly frustrated and now know again why I stayed away from their stuff... NEVER NEVER EVER will I buy something from Apple. My wife should be happy I love her so much, otherwise I would have sent the iPod back already, maybe even sent it out the window.
Ok, got that off my chest!

On a more calm note here, I think I must really look into the software, because I am not liking it. Maybe it is just something to get used to, but I do not agree with some things it does. Maybe I can figure it all out and then the iPod will be my new best friend.... MAYBE...

Eh, not the same man. The key location is different, so using shortcuts in excel (windows excel that is) is different - hand placement is off.

Plus, the lack of right click kills it.
They all right click. All you have to do is touch 2 fingers, index and middle to the pad and then click. That is a right click on the touch pad. Or you can get an external mouse, which everyone has anyway...right? Right click has been a part of the OS since before I bought my first one in 2004.

I think that everyone that switches to an Apple product should have a buddy that already uses Apples. I volunteer all the time to help people if they have a question, but no one takes me up on it.

I had to "unlearn" a lot of crap you have to learn to run Windows. I think it's like that for all of Apple's stuff.

I was ready to jump head first into the Mac world by purchasing a 17" mac pro - but decided to wait for the refresh so I could avoid the whole nvidia graphics explosion issue.

After yesterday I'm a little miffed that I'll have to wait till next year to purchase that new 17"er.

I've been hearing a lot of people complaining that they are not pleased with the 'glossy screen only' option. And the loss of firewire on certain models.

So put me down for a 'no' vote. But ask again in a few months.

As for the 15 inch pro - whats the deal with the dual graphics chips? I saw that you can switch from one to the other, but you need to completely log out of the machine before doing so? Thats kind of lame. The sony vaio's currently have the dual chips, but switching from one to the other does not require a log out?

True - but the different keyboard layout is trouble. I use excel ALOT and know the shortcuts lik the back of my hand. I tried using a mac with Windows and it just wasn't the same. Guess I could get an extranl keyboard, but then thats getting crazy.

Not trying to sway, just educate: It's mostly command instead of control. I forget what control even does. I also was crappy that I couldn't switch between windows with alt + tab. It's command + tab for applications, and command + ~ for windows within an application.

It was a matter of me just learning stuff differently. I remember when I first switched I would go back to Windows when I needed to do something/anything with MS Office, except mail. I like Entourage much better. It was just a process of learning things differently.

Well, unlearning is alright, but if I tell iTunes to use a folder outside of "My Music" and it goes back to using the one inside "My Music" every time there is something wrong.... I finally got it right by pressing shift while opening "The Program" (i think i will be referring to iTunes as "The Program" from now one, just like Harry Potter people call "You Know Who" You know who) and telling it to use a different source, although in the preference menu I had selected that source already. Weird is all I can say!

But you are right, it is just learning something new. I just really detest programs that do stuff all on their own, I like telling them what to do... Or at least have the feeling that I am telling them what to do.

Oh well, for now I have got my normal blood pressure back....

Never did understand those monsters. Awfully unwieldy for a portable. It's as much of a 'laptop' as a German Shepard is a 'lap dog'. Doesn't play well in an Air Tube except in First Class. Many fewer choices when it comes to transporting it and when you pack the necessary support gear it carries like a desktop. I can only envision them being used effectively by Club DJs or on a location shoot.

How do you use yours?

Well I do not think I ever answered my own post so here it goes. I REALLY want the MacBook Pro and the wife Really wants the 13 inch MacBook. We also factored in the additional cost of the router since we would want to run the N speed and not the G speed. We added up all of the things we wanted or thought we needed like more ram and a faster hard drive and then looked at the cost. We then kept looking at the screen and decided to go out for a walk and discuss the pro's and cons of such a decision.

When we returned we realized this was a want and not a need since her older MacBook is working just fine.

The additional screen real estate is really useful for what I would use it for (application development), and plan on using it mainly as a desktop, occasionally traveling with it.

So for my needs, a 17 is the way to go.

I have seen people use it for CAD while they are in the house and hae the extra room in a mobile computer is perfect.

I'm a maybe. My macbook is only a year old so I don't have a compelling upgrade reason, but I'm tempted anyway.

My vaguely good reason to upgrade is that theoretically the uni-body aluminum case would be a whole lot sturdier than previous versions. I'm really really hard on laptops. I've bent, cracked, broken bits off of, warped, and otherwise physically damaged every single laptop I've ever had. (And I've had an apple laptop since 1990). I think I'm on applecare's shit list.

But my real reason for wanting to upgrade is all world of warcraft! The only major improvement of the 'guts' of the laptop is the new graphics card. I would love to have a decent graphics card in a 13" laptop! But since I barely have time to do laundry let alone play WOW, I shouldn't let that influence me into a shiny new laptop. ... But it's so shiny and pretty!! *drool*

Also, the higher-end new macbook has a light-up keyboard. I miss that feature of the macbook pro. It's surprisingly handy.

I have a 15" MacBook Pro that I picked up back in May 2006, and a Mac Pro desktop I picked up a few months ago. Ever since picking up my Mac Pro, I haven't really used my MacBook Pro much. Not even for class, although my battery right now only lasts 15-20 minutes.

Will I pick up the new MacBook Pro? I don't know. Eventually. I can't beat dual 23" displays on my Mac Pro, though. Haha.

The new MacBook line looks really nice, though.

I suppose I could suffer a bit and buy the MacBook Pro with the 800 firewire,
It would mean having to get a converter to go from firewire 800 to 400.

What a nuisance that would be though.

I got one My 2001 TiBook broke about 2 weeks ago so I got the 2.0GHz MacBook as soon as my local Apple store had one in stock (Thursday). So far I'm loving it....way faster than my old 667mhz machine.

I really like the new trackpad. You can set it up (in the system preferences) so that when you click the right side of the trackpad it's a right click and obviously, the left side is a left click. The whole no button thing is really cool and the feel of the trackpad is great....so silky to slide you fingers across. I also really like being able to use 'gestures', the LED backlit screen (for env't reasons) and having a hard drive way bigger than my old 30GB one.

There's right click on macs. ctrl-click if you are using the trackpad, or if you are using an external mouse it already knows how to right click.

I use external monitors at work & home with my 12 inch G4 powerbook. This laptop size is great for scoot commuting or travel, and with the externals, has enough screen area for serious work. Although the G4 is three years old, I'm still happy with it (not so convinced by Leopard on it) and am not considering its replacement.

My computer purchases always pay for themselves as work tools within a year or less so justification has never been as issue to me. I can't say the same for any other big purchases I've made.

Got a new unibody MacBook Pro today 2.53 GHz 4/320.
The case is gorgeous and I like the screen, but my last two MBPs were glossy although lots of people dislike them. For video and photo work I prefer the gloss although if I was a writer or coder I probably would not.

The optional mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter works fine if you have a larger external display without the new mini connector (like the new Apple 24").

iPhoto and Final Cut Pro are noticeably snappier, have not fired up Photoshop yet.

Got a new unibody MacBook Pro today 2.53 GHz 4/320.
The case is gorgeous and I like the screen, but my last two MBPs were glossy although lots of people dislike them. For video and photo work I prefer the gloss although if I was a writer or coder I probably would not.
Photo and video may look better on the glossy but the matte screens were better for color fidelity and color correction. Not that it matters all that much considering how many people use external monitors for that stuff and how few of those people go through the time and expense of having all their stuff properly calibrated on a regular basis.

Until some future employer plunks down the $$$ for color calibration, I'm just winging it.

Nope. Got an Asus Eee PC. 1 GB RAM. 40 GB solid-state "Hard Drive." 10" Screen. Xandros OS.The KB is just large enough for me to touch-type. It's not a powerhouse, but it has the Intel Atom CPU and it manages its power well so a battery charge lasts and lasts. It weighs a couple pounds and does everything I need for $475 delivered.

P.S. Number of problems I've had in two months use = 0.

Cheers!

My MacBook Pro is still running fine. I will stick with it until Adobe forces me to something more powerful....

I had my first hands-on with the new MacBook today at the Apple store. It totally smokes my older MacBook Pro (2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 1GB RAM). Illustrator and Photoshop CS4 launch in about 5 seconds. InDesign took 30 seconds. ::drool::
