This past Sunday about 15 of my closest friends and I met up and rode out to No Problem Raceway for Tiger Track Days. We had everything from Hayabusa's, GSXR'S and Tuonos, to a Honda ST1300, a Harley full dresser and my MP3-500.

We arrived at the track to see this kind of action going on:

One of the many riders that was there Sunday was my very good friend and very talented and experienced rider, Rusty, Jr. Some of you may remember him from this picture that was posted sometime last year:

After he had ridden for a while in the A Class, he came over and asked if I would be interested in seeing the MP3-500 run on the track. Well, my response was "Well, HAIL YEAH!!". Now Rusty has a good bit of experience on MP3-250's since he is the former parts manager at Vespa Of Baton Rouge. So we proceeded to start taping up The Beast.

After everything was secured and taped up, Rusty decided to warm up a little bit in the parking lot since he never ridden the 500 before:

Then it was off to the range officer for a safety inspection:

And then off to the races!!!!!!

Well, as you can imagine, one of the first questions on the Rocket Maddness Forums was "How did it do?". Here in Rusty's own words is his ride report:
Quote:
The handling on the MP3 was outstanding , I have ridin them alot on the streets but never been able to put one through its paces like this befor . After a few laps of getting the feel of the new 500 it was time to go. Turn 1 was all out never lift , indicated 90+ on the dash and cilmbing headed into 2 , trail brake slightly going in 2 half throttle , pined it at the apex to round 3 at full , this is where the outstanding braking comes in , full on brake from roughly 70 diving into 4 back to full on through 5+6 , the 5,6 dips were no problem at all on three wheels, 7 8 9 were a clear shot to run flat out , 10 is where it got intresting , I found to go faster I had to get more off the bike , WAY off to try not to completely remove the center stand , trail braked late through 10 and hard on goin into 11, rounding 11 half throttle to three quarter at 12 , in 13 was a lite lift to set up for full on to 14 an let her eat down the straight .

Braking - This was one of the most confidence inspiring braking systems I'v seen . The feed back from the ground to the hand was out right excellent.

Traction - Ever drive on velcro? You cant break this thing lose , I tried.

Power - Well lets face it , you can always have more.

Weight- I think this was the only thing that was a downer. It is a lil sluggish from half to full throttle on the exits. On the up side of that , you go full on much much sooner.

Rideability- The center stand has to go. BUT , the more I think about the ride and look at pictures , it seems to be a saftey feature as well as a tool . With out it would I have over
rode the edge of the tire? Hmmm....

Suspension - Very smooth without giving up feel , this was impressive. The bumps and dips were sucked up and it tracked straight and true .

Fun factor - WEEEEEEEE , that was fricking awsome.

All in all I give it a 9 outta 10 for a sweet all around play toy , the only downer is the amount of mass it has to pull around . Although I didnt catch the tard I wanted to I never stopped grinning .

Thanks Ed , thats one Ill never forget.
It is also one that I will never forget my friend. Thanks for making it happen for me!

There is also a video here that you can download and see some of the action:

http://lahsta.com/videos/NPROCT08.wmv

More pictures from Tiger Track Day October 12, 2008 can be seen here:

http://s28.photobucket.com/albums/c204/EdInBTR/My%20Pics/Tiger%20Track%20Days/2008-10-12/?start=all

So far I have uploaded about 200 pictures and I still have about another 150 to go.

I shot all of the stills and thanks to Chappy for the video.

Rusty and I will be interested in hearing all of your comments. He is also a member here at Modern Vespa and will be glad to answer any questions that anyone has.

Enjoy,

Hey! AWESOME WRITE UP AND VIDEO! THANKS FOR POSTING THIS! Really, really cool stuff.

So, for Rusty, if he gets a moment, a few quick questions:

1. Were you actually able to scrape on the 500 or did your knee touch before the bike? If you were able to scrape, did it seem out of control or do much damage?

2. Just curious, but what do you think this bike would do if they come out with it in the 850?

3. Finally, being an expert level rider, any advice for us 500 riders for taking curves on our babies?

I recently rode the Dragon, and I'm no expert by any means, but I found that the 500 helps 'compensate' for some of my weak areas(like left side turns...grrrr ).

Na, he is just a VERY talented rider! He is so good that I entrusted him with my bike, knowing full well that if he wrecked it, my insurance would probably not cover the damage since it would have occurred on a race track. Having said that, the bike is now about 1 lb lighter cause I think he ground a pound off the center stand.

Tanks for the thumbs up on the track report. It was a lot of fun, especially watching Rusty make the MP3 do what it was designed to do!

Thanks luthorhuss. It was a lot of fun doing it. The only frustrating part was PhotoBucket not wanting to cooperate. I wound up having to write it twice as PhotoBucket decided to hang just as I had it almost finished the first time and I had to restart to get it to start working so I lost all that I had done up to that point.

I am sure that Rusty will be along soon and will be glad to answer your questions. I sent him a PM telling him the report was up.

That is some of of the best 'turning' shots I've seen recently. Awesome stills!.

I've never been to a track day before, so can you explain why you tape up all the lights and reflectors? Is it to stop other riders getting dazzled as they ride around? Or is it just so the photographers can get great shots?

Forgot to ask, has your ride been modified?
If not, I bet the J Costa might have helped a bit.

The bike is right off the showroom floor stock except for the Piaggio windshield. I had a J. Costa variator on my 250 and loved it and have been considering putting one on the 500. I may also consider the Leo Vince pipe if I decide to try this myself, just for the reduced weight and the increased ground clearance.

When Rusty drops by here, hopefully he will comment on the boots. Clap emoticon

Rusty's ride report makes reference to the turns on the track by number. You can view the track layout and see what turns he is referring to by going here:

I was kinda waiting for Rusty to comment on that, but I will. Yes it is a safety step. All of the lights, mirrors, reflectors and anything else that could potentially break and create a safety hazard on the track is taped up. These guys are EXTREMELY safety conscious. All bikes are inspected before being let onto the track, the track is inspected from one end to the other before anyone is allowed on it, an ambulance with EMT's is on the track for the duration, spotters with radios are placed all over the track for continuous surveillance, and violation of any of the safety rules is absolutely NOT tolerated. This was my first, but not my last, time at track day. I was VERY impressed with the overall operation and the welcoming attitude of everyone. I mean, they even let a scooter play on their playground!

Thanks Ed,

What a shot of testosterone to see my bike's true capacity realized in the hands of an expert rider. I think this further blurs the lines between a scooter and a motocycle, certainly in terms of performance. Let the Harley and crotch rocket riders smirk at my ride. I know what's really "under the hood".

First of all , thank you guys for your coments.

1. It was a scary how easy the stand drug the ground. I had to move way over on the seat hanging off the bike to try to get it to hold the line on the track. The biggest fear was having it lift the rear tire off the ground and lose control. It did remove some of the centerstand , but the more I look at it , it kept the CVT cover from draging and didnt allow me to over ride the tire. Now keep in mind this was a race track and I would never suggest riding like this on the street.

2. The 850 . I cant wait to ride it . If they can drop some weight and shoe horn the 850 in , WOW.

3. A local trackday would be best to find the limits . If you can find a nice country road to ride , just ride . Seat time is the best. Just remember to ride well within your personal limits . Dont try to keep up with other riders if they are faster. Do the same route over and over so that you become confident with the road , your machine , and your level . You cant help but improve.

The tape . It just makes it easier to pick up the pieces

A lil story for ya.

One evening I decided to take a vespa 250 out to our local bike nite. Now this is a group of drag racers , kneedragers and mines bigger than yours type of group. When I pull in I get the imidiate , what are you doing laughs . As the night goes on they ask if I was going to get the real bike to go on the ride. My answer to that was , Im on it .

The LSU lakes are a stomping ground for us after bike nite , very curvy and wet if you make a wrong step. Soooo, I made a deal with them as they laughed at my choice of ride for the evening. If any one of you can beat me to the beach , I will buy you a scooter.

Now these guys have some top notch bikes making well over 150hp. BUT, by the time I got to the beach , took off my helmet , lit a cig and watched them come in one by one with a grin on my face , a new respect was had for the scooter in Baton Rouge.

A scoot will far out handle a bike in tight situations . The little 250 gets all the credit for this new found respect . It was not me . Had I been on my bike vs that scoot , I would have seen its tail lights disapear along with the rest.

Ride Proud David , Goliath has been beaten.

No, I don't have, nor do I remember ever seeing you in a clown suite on the MP3, but it sounds like a good time!
