I'm thinking about getting heated grips for the winter, and I'd like to fit them myself. Does anyone know if it's possible to simply plug them into the unused wiring in the legshield? The pictures of the grips look to have plugs etc already fitted on the wiring? Surely it couldn't be that simple? haha

Thanks

Matt

i asked my mechanic about this the other day - he recommended against it and suggested i'd be better off running it directly off the battery as the grips draw quite a bit of power. mind you i was asking about doing it on my ET4 - perhaps the GTS wiring loom is more robust.

Run a separate feed from the battery, via an extra ignition controlled relay. Installed these many a time, easy peasy, honest Guv!

Must be because you have more than your share of normal people over there in London.

...please send some of your extras back across the pond, if you would be so kind.....

Heated grips
Cool - thanks for the advice - it's getting nippy here so it's about time I went out and got them!

Just done mine. Feed a bit of coathanger wire up into the legshield area from the battery.
Take the headlight fairing off. Squirt some WD40 down under the grips using a thin screwdriver and remove. I used the horn feed to trip the relay.
Didn't use the control unit as it is too bulky to fit nicely on the gts, instead just a very small toogle switch that I can turn off and on easily with my left index finger while on the move.

I bought the Oxford Hot Hands, the wrap-around type. Each grip draws 1.3 Amps. If possible I'd really prefer to run them off the switched live behind the left knee pad, rather than wiring all the way down to the battery.

I've been studying this thread Turn Signal Beeper and 12V Power Outlet on a GTS, particularly the first paragraph referring to the security alarm connector: a 12 volt switched source, fused at 10 amps & feeds only the instrument cluster, "you've got plenty of juice available right there."

Adviseable or not??

At 2.6 amps you'll be ok.

Thanks John, your Power Outlet thread is a great resource, very informative.

The temp gauge was flashing at 0°C on my ride in to work this morning... think it's time to get these over-grips installed.
