Haven't you ever seen a convoy of dozens of Humvees and troop trucks clogging traffic on I-94 between Madison and Minneapolis on a Sunday morning? It's ridiculous. I've been stuck going through them at least a half dozen times.
Yep, seems like every weekend they're out and about these days. I couple weeks ago we were coming back to Eau Claire from Milwaukee and we saw an open top Humvee with a manned .50cal on top followed by a camo cube truck followed by another Humvee with another manned .50cal on the roof. It really got us thinking: "What was in that middle truck".

when i lived in south dakota, you would see nuclear missles being transported to north dakota a few times a year. it was as you described tom, only with about 8 manned trucks on either end of a huge unmarked white semi.

As I heard it, a very large number of helicopters were flying down to Michigan to attempt an airlift of Ted Nugent's ego. I'm not sure they ever made it back.

Really fun to be on the other end though. There's no sensation quite like doing a low level in a helo with the doors open. Imagine blasting down the road on a Vespa at 200mph, only with a better view.
AB-so-fucking-lutely! I got to go on a ride in college in a UH-60 Blackhawk with the AZ Air Nat'l Guard unit near Arizona State's campus. There were some DEA guys on board, and we flew way out into the desert to look for pot farms. On the way back, we flew "map of the earth" and doors-open - what a RUSH!
I'm guessing that you meant "nap of the earth."
One thing some don't understand is that it takes a lot to move even a small military unit, a lot. More than likely this was just a training exercise. You have to train as if you are at war, otherwise the training is worthless. Some times it can look menacing. A lot of times that is the point. If you look like a bad ass, act like a bad ass, you must be a bad ass.

Bell 47. First aircraft of any kind I ever flew in. They can be pretty frightening for kids - no visible means of support. A lot of helo pilots leared to fly in those, and still remember them fondly.

As a passenger, I like the Blackhawk and the Chinook best. Never got a ride in a gunship though. I imagine the view from the front seat of an Apache is pretty spectacular.
Ive always had a thing for WWII aircraft models and helos themselves. Ive always wanted to ride in a Huey. The LA County Sheriffs use that noisey Korean War Helo.

My fave attack copter is the super cobra.

Spooky was 9-11
Worked 5 miles from Andrews AFB and 1 mile from D.C.
Only thing in the air was Military equipment, very strange.
Took us 2 days to figure out there were no vapor trails in the sky from the airliners..

I think I'm one of four people on earth that has never watched Urban Cowboy.

Oh, and I forgot to add Iron Eagle to my list. Many of these (somewhat cheesy) movies are available streaming on Netflix's Watch Instantly service.

Yeah, that pretty much sucked. At the time, we lived in northern VA, right under what became one of the turn points for the fighter patrols. They were the only thing flying for a few weeks.

The other thing I remember about that was the weather. In the DC area, 9/11 was the clearest, calmest fall day imagineable. There were several days after that of just beautiful weather, which somehow made the whole thing even more painful.

I took the "Dam Trip" at Paul Bunyan Land in Brainerd, MN back in 1986.

It was a helicopter flight, pretty cool.

Only trouble was i couldn't get close since the road i was on was public and the heli was on a military property. So i just whipped out my super telephoto lens Damn thing emitted some kind of frequency that wouldn't let my camera focus It was cool looking though.
