Yesterday I missed drinks at work. I had to leave early, since I had to babysit my nephew and niece. Most of my women colleagues have the friday off, so they were celebrating their weekend. I have only one male colleague and he was the token victim to spend the drinks with them alnoe
Anyway, it turns out I was the topic of most of the conversation. The general opinion of my female colleagues was that "I need a woman". Well, it is very sweet of them to think of me, but... well.
Anyway, besides all coments about me, my male colleague told me this morning (who rides a pushbike), that according to my female colleagues it would be better if I stopped riding a scooter and purchase a car. Not better for my personal situation (no, why would they consider that?), no I would be more attractive to the opposite sex, if I own a car...
I was a bit surprised, because, in my face they always tell me how cute they think my scooter is. LOL To be honest, I think it is complete rubbish.

But anyway I am wondering now: Are my female colleagues shallow exceptions, or... is it true? Do women really fancy a guy in a car? (i still think this is ridiculous)

maybe you're asking the wrong group of women i think most blokes on 2 wheels are dead sexy ... infinitely more attractive than a man so worried about his shoes/hair/hugo boss suit/implied size of his tackle that he has to hide himself away in a cage.

that said .... if it's a chinese POS held together by gaffer's tape and driven stupid fast and dangerous by a bolshy moron, there's a good chance i'd turn him down for a date

I don't know if I would say they are shallow, but riding daily takes a special commitment and love for 2 wheels, as well as an acceptance of being exposed to the environment. This is not something for everyone and girly girls* might be hesitant to go farther then look. Your looks and image are half or your first impression.
For non-riders, a scooter carries positive 8) and negative images of being environmentally conscientious, economical, fun, and practical but also frugal to the point of won't or can't afford a car, impractical or uncomfortable when its cold or rainy, a general hassle to wear a helmet, jacket etc. (etc......).
I think a lot of the "image" depends on where in "life" you are at, what job you have, what kind of person you are and what kind a person you are looking for.
There comes a point in life when a car would indicate "success" or "all grown up". Anyone "dressed up" (as women often do) would find it a bit of a hassle to get gear on and go for a ride after work, especially if they are not wearing or not comfortable going out with the basic gear (boots, jeans/long pants, jacket etc...)

*I couldn't think of a better description then Girly Girls, so... I hope you know what I mean.

If a potential "date", is not willing to accept you with the lifestyle that you have, and respect it...they are not worth spending dinner with.

Worse, many marriages fail because one party thinks, after marriage, they will "change" their mate for the better. Used to be a commonly held view. Just watch an old movie from the 1940s.

Or ask your parents. Crying or Very sad emoticon

It must be something with Dutch women...

Women in my office want "scooter rides" around the parking lot during our lunch hour... It was fun at first, but now I'd rather just eat in peace...

It goes back to the caveman days....best hunter gets best cavewoman. Ugga Ugga.

Do an experiment. Drive 2 cars in the same day. One lets say an average Hyundai, the other a high end luxury car. I'd bet my last scooter that you'll get more looks from the opposite sex in the luxury car.

I know, I had to drive my bosses top of the line Benz one day....suddenly I became 10 times more attractive. I got looks from women that wouldn't have given me a second thought in my Hyundai. It depressed me for weeks!!!

So, the office girls might just be telling you the cold hard facts of life. If you live in a part of the world where most people have cars, and you don't, it's not necessarily a plus.

haha I know that feeling. One time I had an employer when I was 19 ask me to watch over his Carrera Turbo Porsche for a week and let me tell you I got the looks. Some where older people wondering what I was doing with that car and lots of females as well. Too bad I don't have 130k to drop on a car.

THey may want rides around the lot at lunch, but I'll wager that if you showed up on Saturday night to take them out on a date on the Vespa their mind would change...

Lots of girls/women love to go for ride and be free spirited. But, lots/most of girls also want to get dressed up for a night on the town or night out for dinner. Being on two wheels might be fine for us guys, and a few girls, but it isn't seen with the same eyes by most of the population and that includes girls who love to really fix up their hair.

I always ask a girl if she wants me to pick her up in the car or on the scoot, this is why I have a cager as well as the Vespa...

Lol.. Thanks for all the replies. I know I am not get a representive picture here! Wrong sample. The funny thing is, my profession is research and I could set up a little questionnaire.

The women on here love scooters! Which is a good thing. I haven't seen any Dutch women on here though. So maybe one of you got a point! Maybe it has something to do with the women in this country? hahaha

A car in NL is such a waste! Traffic jam all the time, no place to park, fuel prices are insane, and i live 15 mins away from work. It would be completely useless for me! Besides that, I enjoy riding my scooter way too much!

Have a good weekend!

The girls who I work with are willing to overlook that I'm an overweight underemployed married guy who drinks and smokes too much.
They all want to ride with me on my scoot.

I think the women you were talking with think you would look more financially sound if you had a car.

Shallow people suck.

Don't get depressed. Use this as motivation to make something of yourself and get rich.

Never mind the Mercedes, how about one of these?

In America, at least where I live, you need a car even if you have a scooter or motorcycle. A man without a car would definately have trouble getting a date here, at least in the winter.

...This morning I pulled up beside a semi-cougar on Mission at 14th and gave her a once over. Looked away, and when I looked back she was giving me the complete in-take.

I'm pretty sure cruising a Vespa is a veritable panty dropper.

That is my take on it.

I've never been attracted to a guy just because of what he drives. If I were single, I wouldn't not like a guy because he only owns a scooter and that's not because I have one. But if I had a date and he showed up driving a POS, I might wonder what's wrong - does he have really bad credit, get into lots of accidents or had a DUI and can't afford insurance?

"Top Gun"

Women who are looking for a guy ready to settle down and have a family... yes they probably view your carless-state as a strong indicator against you. I find that attitude in other women offputting, like any guy who's a good provider will do. I wanted (and got) a best friend and a partner, but then again I have no urge to have kids so I shouldn't be too dismissive of what I don't understand.

The way I see it your scooter is acting as a handy screening device.

It may not be fair, but, life often isn't. Visual impressions are culturally specific and difficult to shake. Picture a 6'-2", 230 lb guy pull up to the curb in front of your place. He's dressed in black leather jacket, FF helmet, jeans and black harness boots on a big black Harley chromed out. Now, picture the same guy pull up on a black GTS 250 chromed out. Get the same impression? Not exactly? You should...if not, why not? Right? Wrong? It just is...
