I have a strange problem. I just did my first DIY oil change and now my oil light is blinking. But it DOES NOT blink when I stop or when I am in a turn. It only blinks when I slow down on one road. Strange thing is that it is just that one road that it blinks. If I slow down on any other road the light does not come on. Just that one road.
I checked my oil and it is fine (just one drop over the max line). Could that be it? Should I be concerned that my oil is a smidgen over the max?

that is really strange.
I would SsUuCcKk some of the oil out and level it off to where indicated on the dip stick.
If that doesn't do it,
I would not ride on that road.

"Doc, my shoulder hurts whenever I raise my arm up like this."

"So don't raise your arm up like that!"

Seriously, slightly overfull won't hurt anything--and in fact, within a few miles, it's likely to be down to the full mark.

Why the oil light is blinking at all, though, I haven't a clue--normally that means a loss of oil pressure and would more likely occur if you hadn't refilled with enough oil.

Is that "one road" bumpier than most? Perhaps there is a loose connection somewhere.

It turns out that it is not just that one road. Is a loose connection the problem?

Maybe not a loose connection (then the light wouldn't come on at all) but maybe a chafed wire, causing the oil pressure switch feed to make contact with the frame somewhere. Not so uncommon...

Found what MIGHT have caused it. When I changed the oil I put in 5W30. I have since drained and replaced it with 5W40.

Problem solved. Turns out that I filled it with too little oil (duh) I must learn to read the manual before doing these things ("600-650cc"). Did not hear any scraping so hopefully I did not cause any damage to my engine. Sorry about that Puff.

I don't mean to start a flame war, but this is one example of why paying a dealer to maintain your Vespa can be money well spent. A fairly simple task like an oil change can have catastrophic results if not done correctly. True, you might save a hundred bucks, but if a mistake cost you $3,000 for an engine, what savings was there?

Did you also change the filter?

OK so you said it was one drop over the line in the first post and now you say you put in only 600 cc?? Which one is it?

The more basic question is why would the oil light blink. Well it goes "on" when the oil pressure drops and goes "off" when the oil pressure is OK.

It would blink only if the oil pressure would drop and then increase. The flickering (rather than blinking lets say) is because with too little oil would be sloshing around and depending on the level of the scooter some oil would be picked up and then the light would go off. Therefore percieved as "blinking".

The good news is that the light wasn't totally "on". That would have been a terrible thing. Hope you didn't travel on the highway like this or for great lengths of time in hot weather. Good luck and listen carefully for strange engine noises. Timothy

For Nightwing: True, you may screw up the first time but it was my fault and I will not do it again. Problem solved. It's all a learning experience.
Yes I changed the filter and the O ring.

For Scion: The 5W30 I put in the right amount. When I changed it I put in too little. Then I drained it again and then put in the correct amount.
