My brave wife "survived" a rear tire blow-out on her way home from work. By braking softly and holding onto the handle bar with a kung fu grip she avoided a crash.
She was about 100 meters from our house so I did not have to push the Vespa too far to get it home.

WOW glad she's safe and had her wit's about her. If you over react you tend to get screwed. What kind of tire and was it old? Tell her to have a good stiff drink for me to calm her nerves. I'd pay but i live far away

How fast was she going do you think when the tire blew out?

Did the tire just wear through or did it blow out for some other known reason?

Hello!
Yeah, I'm glad she's ok too. Thank you.
I believe she did have a cerveza to help her deal with the "traumatic" experience, or at least that was her excuse...
She applied both brakes, gently. I guess she learned that in her Driver's Ed. class (many moons ago)
The tires were way too old, one side just exploded. They are some white walls made in Slovenia (I can't remember the brand) I have heard they are pretty good, but I reckon those are just too old. We should've known better.

Hi Len!
Fallbrook? That is just around the corner. We'd love to come out there and meet some Vespa enthusiasts. We are going to start the painting process ( I've seen your posts and pics in the "DIY paint" thread, nice job) so the scooter will be parked for a while. As soon as it's ready we'll scooter our way up to your neighborhood!!

Better a Rear blow out then a front one , god that sounds bad

i have had many Rear Blow Outs Not the Messy Kind !

you never want a front blow out

once had a tire Vanish at around 80+ mph on a P200
all that was left was my rim it took me about 1/2 the track to stop this was at the Milwaukee Mile back in 96 had a copy of it on video it was amazing I didnt wreck the shitty part was the rim was brand new

make sure you have new tires with J rating on them, remember its only your LIFE

Sava
good to hear your wife is ok and it takes quite a bit of skill to feel a flat and hold on while moving! Blown out Sava likewise could it be the tire?

I heard you should change your tires every 6 years because of rubber degrading after time.....if they need it or not...
I just took off a set of Michelin's that were made in 2004, and there was already cracking at the sidewall....
Also, when buying tires, or buying a used scooter, check out the date of manufacture, it should be on the sidewall. Some dealers have old stock tires, that should not be used.
Most online tire dealers have such a turnover of tires, they should be fresh.
With tires, the newer, the better.....

The PO bought the bike in 2004, and we got it in June, so those tires are at least 4 years old, but they look older (sides are cracked), I reckon we should've been more observant.
Don't know about the quality of the tire, I've read they're well made. But I agree, the newer the better.

Hmmmm, I think you are right, had she skipped lunch the tire might have been able to support her weight
