I have been feeding 2 stray cats..I guess from people having to move out of there houses..I noticed late at night something finishing all the food..I just looked out with a flashlight and saw a possum..Should I keep feeding it?I guess it is a stray cat also..They need to eat..
We have so many opossums up here we call them rats on steroids. They are constantly road kill. The joke here is, why did the chicken cross the road? To show the opossum it could be done.
This post makes me realize how broad the range of forums on which I post. My other lurking place is talonairgun.com and a late night encounter with a possum there will end a little differently. 0_o
Im a Ranger n spend alot of time getting asked this question by members of the public (im in AUS - we have possums here to).
Legalities aside - check with your state/ country . . . . .
Usually what happens is people in good faith/ good will to nature feed local possums (one possum usually becomes 6 within days), however when the person feeding the possum moves house/ goes on holidays or dies . . . . . the said possums have by this stage lost their natural will to forage and find food. Also they become accustom to both humans and domestic animals. Once the source of food disappears they usually move to some unfortunate persons house and end up poisined, shot or eaten by the dog . . . .or some just starve due to having lost the will or ability to find food themselves. Your choice . . .. but can cause future problems . . . . .
