Someone with a more technical background may follow up but it is my understanding that all Modern Vespas have CVTs.
Constant Variable Transmission. Therefore there is no fixed ratio and no gears. |

It's my understanding that the gear ratio changes constantly depending on RPMs, roller weights, variator, etc. The CVT transmission is designed to alter the the shape and circumference of the belt; gear ration changes with it.
There's a good explanation here: http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8960 |

There are two sets of reducing gears in the rear hub. The stock tooth counts of the first set are 15/46 while the replacement Polini set is 17/44.
It's a rather large gear increase but if you've done the 190 kit, pipe, cam... then it's really needed to use the extra power. Thanks for pointing it out, I've been searching for anyone that had it in stock. Just placed an order. By the way, The Malossi gear kit for the ET4/LX replaces the second set of gears but it's intended for the 125. if you put it in the 150 it will gear it down. |

Because I have already done all this: Well my scoot was finally completed with the seat I got yesterday so all together this is what i did to it: Malossi: Torque Driver, Clutch, Torsion Controller, Variator, 190cc kit, and kevlar belt. A Scorpion jet flamed exhaust with new twin strap mount. Bitubo shocks front and rear. LED front running lights, turn signals, and brake light, also super white front bulb. Chrome grips. Floor mat. Scorpio Alarm. Jettin Chrome Visor. Custom painted 1970's GMC tangerine orange. Custom seat from Pirate Upholstery with orange racing stripes and gel inlay (by the way it's awesome and I highly recommend going through Pirate, they were quick and did an awesome job). S/X appeal saddle bags. And custom license plate and license plate frame. And have been wondering if there is more I can do to make it faster. Someone else said that with this Polini gear kit you would lose acceleration, is this true? Do you know? |

Patrick hit it right on the head to gain that power you needed to be kitted out , Polini is also making another gear set up I just saw it in some new products 19/42 gear but was unsure if it would work for the LX 150

My maths saying 18% but I always get messed up with percents.
With the stock gears and variator in the LX150 you hit the rev limiter at ~74mph. With the 17/44 primary gears that moves up to ~87mph. The malossi variator drops the top speed on a stock bike from 74 to 71 so if you run the malossi variator and the polini 17/44 gears you end up with a top speed of ~84mph. you can also add a 130 tire to the rear and it almost exactly compensates for what you lose with the malossi variator. Keep in mind that you need the power to actually get to those speeds and the power requirements go up as the square of the speed so you need at least a 22% increase to get to a level ground speed of 74mph and a 100% increase to get all the way to the rev limiter at 87mph. |

I am getting more excited then when I went to my Prom... 84 top? That means 70-75 average ? Actual- not indicated...? I know what I what for Christmas.... I have been a very good boy... |

I've topped 85 (indicated, under good conditions) on my LX and really don't want it to go any faster. It's just not built to sustain those kinds of speeds. I basically modded my scoot to the point where it will top out higher than I really want/need it to. I do enjoy other benefits from the mods, though, so don't regret them, but...
Now I'm much more interested in upping my off the line acceleration without sacrificing any more of my MPGs. As is, with my performance mods (190 kit, Malossi Multivar with mixed 9.5g/14g weights, Sito+ exhaust) I get less than 50MPGs. I wasn't keeping track of my fuel economy as I added each mod, so don't know which had how much affect, though I know the 190 kit probably made the biggest dent. I might just go with lighter weights and see how that does. Hadn't considered going to a 130 tire; might give that a try next time around too. |
