Modern Vespa

I watched the Giro di Lombardia bicycle race (Varese, IT to Lago Como) last night and spotted a couple Piaggio MP3s being ridden by the race marshals, though I realized later they were Gilera Fuocos, same as the Piaggio but with a different badge.

From the Team Slipstream website: "The Giro di Lombardia takes place in the Lombardy region of Italy. Typically the last race on the European pro calendar, it is often called "la classica delle foglie morte" (the race of the falling leaves). It is 242 km long and includes the Madonna del Ghisallo climb where there is a special shrine to the patroness of cyclists."

That's cool. I've been wondering if and when the various support riders (officials, cameramen, etc) at bicycle races would start switching to MP3s. Seems like a really good way to lower the number of wipeouts in inclement weather.

Did you watch that on OLN? Oops, I mean "Versus"? Noticed last year at the Giro d'Italia (May '07) that they were using MP3s too.
