We had our first taste of the weather to come in the next several months today. On my way home it started to snow. Now I know that this is just wet snow so it won't stay put on the ground and accumulate, but it was snowing none the less. I hate winter and I can't believe that we had our first taste of it in mid October already. Riding on street car tracks with wet snow on them is fun.

Say it ain't so, Benny!
It's wet and cold here, and I nearly froze to death on the scooter riding home in the rain, but I kept telling myself "at least it isn't snow". Last year I rode until December 2 before I had to park the scooter for the winter - I'm counting on at least another month. |

Not ready for it yet. We've had a pretty nice fall so far, and I'm hoping we make it to mid-November without the white stuff.

It got all the way down to 54 at 5 a.m. so I drove my car to work. Then this afternoon it got up to 83 so after coming home from work I drove the scooter in. Winter is on its way.

WTF is S.N.O.W.?
Oh Benny - I'm so sorry to hear of your unfortunate weather. Just this AM I was wondering if it was time yet to break out overpants for my commute (in a business suit), but I'm gonna wait it out until I am good and freezing. Which is anything under 70 degrees here. Keep those chins up, non-winter riders. Us sunny weathered folks will buoy your spirits with pictures, modifications and rides for you to delight in from afar. |

I'll keep riding until the snow stays on the ground or decides to turn into ice. I am hoping that this winter isn't a repeat of last winter with our repeated blizzards and snow that wouldn't melt. If we get a more normal winter we should be able to ride at least a few days every month of the year.
Gitta, you folks need to post pretty photos of your scooters and sunny days for us up here during the winter to keep us going. |

I'll be seriously pissed off if the locals are lying to me when they tell me it doesn't usually snow too much in Longmont. From what I'm hearing, there's only a week or two worth of days where it really isn't safe to ride. I was born in Texas, I'm used to riding in anything that doesn't require a tornado watch or an ice warning. Just moved to the area in April, so I don't know what exactly to expect.
I'm also not expecting to get my Vespa until November. I can't winterize it before it's broken in! I refuse! They're already predicting a snow flurry or two this evening. Ugh. |

Locals lie in Longmont, say it isn't so! They lie like rugs. Some times it has to warm up there to snow, that is when it's not blowing snow down from Wyoming. R

Benny - I had heard that there was a chance of snow up north your way. It was sunny (well, part of the time) and nice - but cold - down south!. I'll have to break out my winter gloves for today.
I saw one other rider today. On a Harley, bare hands, and 1/2 helmet. He did not look like he was having fun. |

Keeping windscreen clean during storms...
Okay, I scooted to work yesterday in the heavy fog with mist dripping in the morning--39F, and rode home in a very gusty, spittin' sleet. The most difficult part was seeing out the FF and the windscreen. The little rubber scraper on my left glove worked "okay", and the cloth in my left pocket helped more.
There is just no way to make this work if the rain turns to snow and it sticks...is there? I'm now seriously thinking the windshield has to be cut to 1/2-inch below eye level. Who has experience on these matters? |

I know it's on the way here in central Illinois, but for now the leaves are changing colors, the air temp is about 45 in the morning and 62 in the afternoon, so for me it's ride, ride, ride as long as I can.

We're due for it today, too. I rode to work this morning and I'm keeping my eye on the weather in case I have to blow out early - although I feel the denial deep in my bones. It's still October, fer cryin' out loud!

Same. Today looked okay to ride, but I am now down to taking it day by day. Riding in rain is okay, but wet snow? No thanks.
Forecast for tomorrow - snow showers. |

Hey, Benny: Don't you have Heidenaus K58s? Take a spin and report back to those who still can't decide between K61s or 58s.

Ugh, there is snow in the forecast tonight and tomorrow. It might be a temporary end to my scootering riding for a couple of days. The problem is that I don't even have the snow tires on my car yet, and you know how well a rear wheel drive car with summer tires does in snow.

I was bad this afternoon, mid 70s and a golden sunlite. I rode in shorts and a t-shirt. I know; not really apropriate... but the warm mild air was just too appealing. I doubt if the opportunity to get that bit of air and light will come again, not much this year any way. R
