okay, i'm prepared for this to be silly but let it fly.

so, i've got a lizard in my shop.
the litte fucker has surpirsed me at least half a dozen times-- popping up when i least expect it. seriously, last time the dammn thing nearly sent me running.

ugh, i hate lizards and snakes.

but ya know what;i hate spiders more, and i'm thinking that lizards eat spiders so i'm hesitant to kill him outright.

anyway, last i checked he was residing under my workbench. there's like a 1/4" gap for him to squeeze thru. i don't know what he's doing under there. it's not like there's stuff to eat or other, female lizards, or a casino or anything. so, wtf??!

so, discuss.

best,
-greasy

Lizards are good luck, always had lizards in my room when living in Okinawa. One scared the crap out of me one night when he fell off the ceiling and landed on top of the TV with a big "splat". Give him a name. Leave him a bottle cap full of beer from time to time. All good. I hate spiders.

omg don't kill it get to know the little creeper. show him where the spiders are and tell to help himself. small eight-legged critters that can slither up inside your jumper are infinitely worse than four-legged mini-carnivores that you can actually see.

You must exterminate him!

Get yourself one of those sticky rat traps, find out what lizards eat (for bait), and catch him! He'll be stuck to the trap and die there...

I say leave him alone. Eventually you'll get used to his popping up every once in a while. He is controlling all the bite-y critters that can move into your shop.

Heck, in NYC some pet shops sell geckos for roach control. You drop him in your kitchen cabinet, leave a little water and almost never see him again. Late at night you can hear a soft crunching sound as he munches on the earth's future overlords.

Attack Lizard....
I get little alligator lizards in my shop all the time. I end up cornering them and just pick 'em up and put it out side......no reason to kill him. This time of year they're just looking for a little warmth.

I think we need photos of this lizard. Shouldn't we find out if he or she is a poisonous and potentially dangerous lizard that might attack and kill you Aaron? If it is then of course you must remove him from your garage. This Gila Monster for example.
External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text

On the other hand if he or she is a helpful non-venomous lizard then let him be and let him keep the spiders and other nasty insects from populating your garage.
External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text This Western Fence Lizard for example which does reside in California is non-venomous. It has a characteristic blue belly. Have a look underneath and see if he likes his belly rubbed. Razz emoticon

Can I borrow it and let it eat the spiders in my house? I saw one scuttling across the floor the other day that was so big I thought it was a mouse! I freaked out and left the house and haven't seen it since. They all come inside in the fall as it gets colder. I hate spiders and would much rather have a lizard!

I say keep it and name it.

A lizard in your shop is indeed good luck. Some belief systems will tell you that lizards will tell you hidden things or secretes. The little reptile is certainly harmless and will eat spiders and roaches. Go listen to Jim Morrison... 8) R

Holy cow! I thought you were having a larf until I noticed you included a link. That's a big spider.

Greasy,
Let the lizard live! Man, I envy you. What a cool little mascot! And it chose YOU!

I don't mind spiders either, though generally I escort them outside.

Mice on the other hand...it's man v. beast and while I always whisper a silent apology to their fuzzy little corpses when I retrieve a sprung trap, I just can't have them running free in the garage. It was their misfortune to have tried to make a home in mine. I live with a terrier who catches once every once in a while and in that case I don't feel bad: that's a fair fight between natural enemies!

I use those live humane traps for mice. Then I just take 'em a block away and turn them free in an empty lot. Got ride of ten of them two years ago that way, and they never came back either! (At least, not to MY house!)

Gahhh....I know you are right. Those traps I use are horrible. I think they are more humane than poison (not to mention I don't like the idea of the little guys just crawling off and dying in the walls or something), but I still feel a little guilty, hence the apologies.

On the other hand, I don't live very close to any vacant lots. Chances are they will scamper into the nearest neighbor's house and continue with their constant pissing and crapping. However, as it pertains to my karma, I suppose finding a good place to let them loose and sparing their lives would be worth the effort.

Ok, I will try a humane trap for a bit.

Okay, why all the hate on for spiders? There is an old saying that a house with a spider is a lucky house. Have you seen the amount of nuisance bugs that a house spider consumes?

Keep the lizard. Keep the spiders. Get rid of any mice (they're just plague vehicles, like rats).

I was on a long lonely stretch of road today in the hills of Monterey county, saw something moving across the road, it was a huge tarantula. I swerved to miss him/her. Had I known you were collecting shop pets, I could have picked him up and dropped him off at your shop on my way home, Greasy.

This sounds like the elusive Wrkshpfkr lizard. You must tear your shop apart tomorrow and find it! Expterminate it before it destroys you. It's what makes every little thing so difficult to fix.

Okay, giant spiders that eat humans whole, or little ones that you can't spot but which will kill a horse, I can learn to be fearful of those.

I lived in San Antonio for 5 years. For the first 2 year I lived in a crappy little apartment (I was a very broke college student at the time) and had a little lizard that lived in my bathroom. He pretty much lived in my shower. A couple of "lady friends" freaked out about it when they went to take a shower. I had it named but I can't remember what it was. Probably Lenny the Lizard or something like that. I miss that little guy. There are no wild lizards in Wichita

I live in the Caribbean where geckos and lizards are regular visitors inside the house. They don't hurt anything and they are completely harmless. They do help rid the house of mosquitoes and other nasty bugs and spiders. They particularly like cockroaches as well.

They are wonderful little critters and when I am gardening, I always have 6 to 10 of them following me around at any given time, hoping I will turn over a rock to expose some likely candidates for lunch or dinner or perhaps a mid-day snack!

I also have lots of (harmless) Virgin Islands tree boas in the orchid garden and every now and again, a 4 and a half foot, green iguana will make an appearance. I think "Iggy" is considering taking up residence in my orchid garden. I seem to see him there more than in any of the other gardens. He likes the shade in there and often just "hangs out", alternately sunning himself on the rocks and then up in the sea grape trees. He's quite shy though and very fast! My dog hates him!
