While riding home today, I felt a tickle on my bare arm. I looked down and damn it, a spider was on my arm, about 4 inches across! 3 flicks and it was gone. Last weekend, a truck driver signalled me with a "creepy crawly" hand signal, telling me there was a spider on my back! I found a use for the side stand, it goes down quickly when you are looking for a spider in your clothes.

These things are living in my scoot! They like the fact, the mirrors catch the street lighting and attract the insects. Easy pickings for a big Huntsmen spider.
Any clues on how to get rid of the buggers?

I *hate* - HATE - spiders. The kind you blokes have down under are enough to keep me on this side of the Equator!

My solution to ridding your scooter of the creepy crawly problem would be to submerge it in that body of water in your avatar for....well, forever.

Yikes.

Malathion where ever you park it and the surrounding area. Here in the states they make an insecticide that will kill pest up to 6 months.

Errr, I hate Spiders, it was after a hockey game and a group of us were standing around BSing, my friends girlfriend was looking down at my crotch , I was just about to make a wise ass comment and she calmly told me "you have a black widow crawling down your leg", I stomped in fear and the spider hit the ground and then my foot stomped the crap out of it, did I mention I was wearing shorts. I hate to think of what it could have bite.

I hate spiders too. Remember the movie Arachniphobia, that freaked me out, the thought of those big spiders.

If you use Malathione I wouldn't recommend being in any prolonged contact with the chemical, it does get aerosolized and you don't want to breath it in or absorb it through your skin, it is very hepatotoxic (toxic to your liver).

The Huntsman spider, (Delena cancerides), lives under bark in groups of up to three hundred individuals. These groups consist mainly of young spiders with just a few adults. They work together to attack and kill insect prey, as well as defend their shelter against spiders from other colonies.

Best methods to get rid of them?

1) Clean away (and burn) any and all woody debris for around the area where you park your scoot.

2) Chop down (and burn) any low hanging branches over your scooter.

3) Spray the immediate area with bug spray.

4) Spray your scooter with bug spray.

5) Stop letting spiders nest in your pet carrier and/or top case if you don't like them!

Yeah, something that size would pretty much freak anyone out! And according to the info below, your spider was smallish for that species. Possibly a female looking to hook up lol!
While frequently very large - Huntsmen male spiders males can attain a leg span of 250-300 mm (9.8-11.8 in) - Huntsman spiders are not deadly to humans. They do bite if provoked, but the victim will suffer only minor swelling and localized pain, and will recover in a day or two

That doesn't make me feel any better!!!!
I join the group of spider haters.... I had a spider actually attack my work boots about 2 years ago. We call them "wolf" spiders . Don't know if it is a correct term but they get real damn big and territorial. Florida peaople know what I am talking about.

BTW Trowels, I've been in FL most of my life and I at first didn't recognize the Wolf. But I researched them and realize that they don't get much bigger than 1 and a qtr. inches. So I have seen them but they aren't really dangerous.....of course if they were as big as in your photo, I'd pull a Forrest Gump...I'd be running

"trowel and cuffs" didn't you read the posting guidelines about pictures? Spiders must be no bigger than your avatar. Subjects okay to post big: scooters, pretty girls, cute puppies... [/b]

I once read somewhere that spiders hate essential oils (specifically flower oils). My roommate at USC and I had a spider problem in our dorm. We found some fancy linen spray that had essential rose oil in it, and sprayed the hell out of everything in our rooms. No more spider problem, and the place smelled nice, too.

If you try that route, you might want to put a small spritz in a not-so-visible spot. Some essential oils can be quite nasty for certain surfaces. But nothing I and my roommate sprayed had any ill effects. And it smells a lot better than bug spray.

You mean the motoroil that Greasy sprays all over the place isn't an essential oil? Razz emoticon

Was riding in Laguna Beach last weekend on a really nice day when a bee decided to fly up my shorts and sting my leg. Not a great feeling when your travelling at 45 mph and you start feeling a burning sensation in your pants!!!

Like I said I don't know what kind went after my foot but it was a good 4-5 inches across. And at my wife's Grandfather's house in DeFuniak we killed one in the house that my 10.5 size shoe didn't cover completely. The freaking thing was huge!!!!!

I had one of those running around my bedroom a week or so ago - totally distracted me from the task at hand. One ran over me in bed once and it is not a nice way to wake up, so they are not welcome in the boudoir. They are bastards to kill - they just will not die. You have to crush, kill, destroy them. Urgh.

I'm happy to say that about sharks in the sea, but not spiders in my bedchamber. No way! Then there was one in my scooter cover the next day. I think I have a colony!!!

yeeeuuurrggghhh..... we don't get any really hair-raisingly large spiders over here, but whenever i encounter one whose size i'm not comfortable with, i prefer to transport them to a distant outdoor location using the 'cup and paper' method.... hearing the horrible crunching sound as you stomp them, and then having to clean the mess up afterwards.... gaaaaggg. i'm getting dry heaves just thinking about it. This thread makes me glad I do not live in an area with large spiders. I have only seen two black widow spiders over the last 12 months and I killed them both this week. One was in our bedroom window and the other was on our patio. Gross! Crying or Very sad emoticon

They are still living in the scooter! But don't seem to crawl around while one is moving, always when you stop. I watched one flattened out on the the screen of the car. It didnt move until I stopped at the light. Jumped off onto a scooter rider. javascript:emoticon('Razz emoticon')

You do start to think about them after a couple of sightings.....

Apparently they are good because they eat other spiders. So if you have Huntsmen you don't have White Tips, which, if they bite you, give you necrosis of the limb they got you on.

I am choosing to think of the hairy bastards in a happy way, based on this.

I wish they did not like vehicular transport so much, however.
