I have a 2007 vespa with 132 miles on it.Starter hangs up each time I start the scooter. I called Las Vegas , Nevada dealer today and service advisor stated ,this was a common problem with new Vespas?Does not last long after engine starts but is always present when scooter is started for a moment or two.Is this that commond on vespas?,or should I take to dealer for repair,?Las Vegas is 128 miles away from my home in Arizona. Thanks for your reply. Jarrett

By "hangs up" do you mean that the starter motor runs on after the engine starts and you remove your thumb from the starter button?
No, this is not normal and has the potential to damage the starter, bendix, or other parts. It needs to be fixed as soon as possible. It may be caused by sticking starter switch or solenoid. If it is the switch you might help it by spraying up into the switch with a little electrical contact cleaner. Even a little WD40 might help. The starter/solenoid/bendix is usually a single package which is replaced together. (Note: I am not a mechanic and may be babbling nonsense. Maybe Greasy or Eric will chime in.) |

How's your brakes. Do they stick? Check brake fluid level and brake pads. Long shot but if brakes stick they might engage starter while sticking.
Order new starter button. Should be cheap easy solution. But starter should disengage when power is absent. Power should be absent as soon as either brake or button is disengaged, eh? This leads me to believe it's the starter itself. Could be a wiring/electrical issue, but I would think it would stay in one position or the other if it's power. My best guess is that a spring on the starter is either weak or missing. You have the power to engage starter but the spring doesn't have the capability to retract it back out, so it stays engaged until centrifical of engine pushes it out. When it's half engaged you run the risk of busting something more serious. I would see about ordering a new starter. Can't be that expensive. |

My et4 has the same problem but not from new, it began after a few thousand miles and has remained consistent now through multiple batteries.
I'm at 6700 miles now; intend to do belt, rollers, and general digging around @7500 so I'll take a good look then. |
