It you think it's cheesy find a better one. You want a NICE cast part expect to pay 5 times as much for it. So do you want a good price with a U Bolt or a cast part at 5 times the price?
My Zumo came with the same mount and I have no problems with it. If they did what you want they would have to have a half dozen different mounts for different handle bar diameters. Wayne B |

Aesthetics v. Functionality
Wayne,
You have a point. I could have used 99-Cent conduit clamps to mount my PIAA lamps and Wolo horn -- but I didn't because I wanted them mounted as securely as possible. Same with the camera. Alan |

I agree their site is lousy. On the ubolt - consider that it will fit into a tighter radius than a flatter clamp.

Space constraints
Bubba Jon,
You make an excellent point about mounting space I didn't consider. I would have ordered the B-149Z-C1U camcorder mount with the U-Bolt Clamp but I sense the middle clamp is the 4" (no specs on the web site) and I need the 6" one to insure the camera lens clears the windscreen. RAM has 38 pages of pictures under Accessories, but no descriptions/specs. Best I can tell the 6" clamp is a 201c and the camera mount is a 202a. I sent RAM an e-mail to confirm. The 201c center clamp is poorly designed in that clamping screws at both ends would be much more efficient than one in the center. I'll probably secure the ends with stainless hose-clamps to insure against slippage/movement. Alan |

Sony V101 Camcorder
Snagged a Sony V101 LANC-capable camcorder today on eBay. Now I have two LANC-capable Sony camcorders.
The folks at RAM Mounts never responded to my e-mail query for prices/compatability because I criticized their web site. I'll find an alternative mount or construct my own. |

A clamp is a clamp, but not when it looks like this.
The new PIAA clamp can be found at www.whitehoursegear.com

Hey IDEFENDM, that new pic looks snazzy and waterproof and all that, but...what happens when you turn your handlebars? It looks like its just gonna drag the camera across the spoiler and mess things up.

Windscreen Clearance
Luthorhuss,
The camera clears the windscreen at full lock. I special ordered the 5 5/8" double clamp to afford me mounting flexibility. Alan |

Sony PC7 Camcorder
Shot my first video today. Started at the base of the mountain on Highway #74 coming out of Palm Desert and stopped filming in Anza on Highway #371. Will see about getting the Mini-Cassette converted to DVD and then posting in on YouTube. I think it's ok for a first attempt. Wish I had a remote mic near the engine/exhaust for effect.
ADDENDA: 11/14/2008 @ 17:30 PST Bought some accessories for the Sony PC-7 Camcorder that will allow me to record audio (music) while filming. Sony VMC-LM7 Handicam Audio Adapter
Sony RK-G128 Audio Cable
My old Panasonic CD Player

November 30th
Departing Chula Vista, CA for El Centro, CA around 1300 on Sunday, November 30th. I'll film the decent down in to the Octillo desert on the I-8 Freeway. This time the tape will have audio, albeit rock n' roll.
The first mini-cassette to DVD conversion of my ride from Palm Desert up the mountain and to Anza, CA should be ready in a week or two. I'll post it to YouTube and post the url to this blog. 5040 miles on the odometer. Oil change today. Mobil 1 T4 Racing 10W-40 with 4 oz. of Prolong. Tire pressures: 41 rear; 40 front. |

Hey IDEFENDM,
Nice shot! Glad you finally got some up even if they're your first ones. Man I wish I lived in a state that allowed white lining. Don't you worry about some jerk swerving or opening a door on you? Anyways, my only advice on the next ones would be to change the soundtrack. I'm sorry but the Mp3 needs metal or rock or something that doesn't sound like lobby music. P.S. Is there anyway to adjust the camera so that you can see just below the lip of the spoiler to view the gauges and the road at the same time? |
