Hey everyone,
I went to my vespa dealer here in nova scotia, canada and they wanted $24 for a oil filter. so, i was wondering if anyone knows of a cheaper place to get it in canada or site in the USA where the shipping price is cheap. fedex is a rip off....it takes the same time as regular mail and was three times the price.
to make it worth it i am going to have to order at least three for me. i have a gt200 and have found one other person in halifax that wants some for his gts250. so if there is someone else in halifax who wants to go in on some, please leave a message.
cheers

I just bought 3 Piaggio oil filters from Scooter Works for $9.99 US each.

Not sure how much shipping is to Canada, but paid around $6 and arrived about 2 days after I placed my order.

If anybody knows the model (part) numbers for appropriate filters from other manufacturers, that might be useful. I'm also in Canada and would like to find suitable LEADER 150 flters.

Is it $12 per filter for shipping ?

You can buy Amsoil 0w-40 in Canada; check the Amsoil web site for local distributors. It's supposed to be very good stuff, and the 0w viscosity is helpful in the colder Canadian weather.

I suppose it depends on what kind of vespa filters you're looking for.
I got my GTS air and oil filters here

No you bought 3 filters that look the same as Piaggio Filters. It says right in the description "Aftermarket Piaggio Oil Filter". I am sure they are good filters, but they are not OEM filters.

I am guessing that it would be difficult to figure out which aftermarket filters are of better or worse quality than the OEM Piaggio.
below is this from
http://www.scootertrap.com/BV500.htm
the top one is the most expensive and so on...
Malossi Oil Filter
Developed to purify the oil that protects the engines and heads of the Malossi Trophy Races. The Malossi Red Chilli filters infinitely small metallic particles and traps a greater quantity of harmful larger contaminants. Built for racing yet perfect for everyday driving.

Athena Oil Filter

Athena brings you their high quality oil filters which meet the demand of today's scooters. Reliable Italian products from a responsible Italian company. These filters meet or exceed your OEM specs and make a great replacement filter
.
HiFlo Oil Filters

HiFlo produces high quality filters at an affordable price. All filters meet or exceed OE specs and are specifically designed for your scooter

the HiFlo is less that half the price at powersportsuperstore.

This thread settled it for me. Are the cheap oil filters just as good?

Tell you what, Ive been using Hiflo filters on my two et4's for 3 years and now my wifes BV250 and my GTS for two years. No problems. I purchased 10 filters from Powersports and I did pay $12.00 for shipping all 10 filters. With shipping it was $5.84 per filter. I go thru approx 3 filters a season on both the BV250 and GTS (Change oil every 3000 miles) Thats $17.52 for oil filters per bike per year. I think that pretty darn good 8)

(Fill the oil filter with oil before installing. I am told this will allow oil to critical engine components sooner)
What i would like to know is who makes the Piaggio oil filter (for some reason i do not trust the Piaggio filter....my guess is that it is over priced and is the same as the HiFo).
Trying to make a list of different brands to choose from...then I would like to choose the best one for the price.
so far i have the names of:
-Champion
-HiFo
-Malossi
-Athena

please add to the list!

OK Powersports have filters for the GTS but what is the part # for the 250????
Is it TR14-0183? Do they ship via US postal service and not fedex or USP?

After poking around on the multiple Sentec websites - 1 plant in Taiwan, 3 in China and 1 in VietNam - the Taiwan plant apparently is the only one manufacturing oil filters ......... (Primary Products and services:
Air Intake System, Filters, Fuel Filter, Oil Filter, Carbon Canister, Catalyst, EMS etc. )

here is some info on the HiFlo Filters:

The Hiflofiltro-Thai Yang Kitpaisan factory was founded in 1955 and has been manufacturing filters for the OEM motor industry since 1963. With the experience of more than four decades, constant research and development and modern production facilities we manufacture today some of the best quality filters in the world.
To achieve and ensure the consistency of our high quality, we use only premium quality materials from well known makers: Steel from Toyota Tsusho and NKK Japan, Glue from Henkel Germany, paper from Ahlstrom Filtration Finland, Hollingsworth & Vose USA and Awa Paper Japan.
With this high quality, the customer list is extensive and includes car makers such as BMW, Peugeot, Ford, Toyota, Mazda, Suzuki, Nissan and Denso.
Hiflofiltro is the complete range of motorcycle filters engineered to extreme quality standards to provide ultimate engine protection.

if you want to order the Hiflo HF 183 from powersport by phone the cost of shipping is:
3 oil filters- $11.98 US mail service-shipping
10 oil filters- $18.40 US mail service-shipping
and that is good for Canada
plus US dollars $4.65 each filter.
plus Canada duty and tax.
(a guess if you where to order 10 for Canada, it would most likely work out to be $8 each Canadian- at the end)

here is a site that talks about the company that makes the HiFlo Filters:

I decided that i wanted to do an oil change before my vespa goes into storage....so no more waiting...I had to decide!--HiFlo it is!
I found out that you can get the HiFlo filters at Toads(here in Dartmouth,Nova Scotia,Canada) for nine bucks plus tax. it is going to take two days to get them and they will be keeping them in stock from now on. I would suggest checking with all the motorcycle shops in your area to see what brands of oil filters they can get in!!! it would have been a couple of bucks cheaper, if i went and ordered ten from the states(didn't really want that many).

I don't trust the piaggio filter for a couple of reasons: they were recalled at one time, the company(Sentec) makes too many other things besides filters, most vespa dealerships use the aftermarket piaggio filter anyways and don't like how piaggio keeps people in the dark about doing simple maintenance to your own scooter(so how can i trust them to choose a good company for their oil filters). that being said, for now i am going with the HiFlo(oil filters is one of the major things that HiFlo makes and it has been doing it for a while). still looking into the other ones (Champion C320, Malossi VM 0313382, Athena FFP002-wish they were easier to get ). the piaggio part #82635R is good to have for a cross reference. the HiFlo #314-0183 .
now, I can do more frequent maintenance knowing what I know and for a third of the price of taking it in to the dealer. thanks for all the great posts and to jess-Petty Tyrant for posting the complete collection of workshop manuals and parts books in PDF format....very interesting reading!
https://modernvespa.com/forum/topic630

I am sure that there is still alot more to be said about what Oil Filter to use on your Vespa! please keep me updated!!!
cheers

Sorry, your reasoning is flawed. Piaggio doesn't keep anybody in the dark about maintenance. If you want information, buy a maintenance manual like you would for a Chevy. GM doesn't tell you how to do a (for example) brake job in the owner's manual. You can download one here for free from the tech section.

As far as the Piaggio OEM filters, the company has more at risk than you do if the filter fails. There are thousands of Vespas in warranty at any time and engine failures due to defective Piaggio oil filters could be costly.

In Canada your Vespa has a one year warranty and if you want to spend an extra $600 you could add an extra two. I just went for the one year and had the Vespa dealership do the service(where they used an after-market Piaggio oil filter). The warranty period is long passed. When I asked the dealership about a Service Manual they told me it was too technical and I didn't need it (i.e. Vespa dealership keeping me in the dark).
We all know that the Vespa dealer makes a large mark up on the simple service. the Vespa owners manual lacks the basics. (i.e. un-like my owners manual for my kaw. KLR650 which does tell you basic service ). Now, if you had read my post above yours...you would have seen a link for the free Vespa service manual download! the piaggio oil filter has been know to be faulty in the past and if it fails, you would not be covered after the warranty is over. Piaggio would cover the cost of the oil filter only!

I didn't say Piaggio would bear the cost for a filter related failure after the bike was out of warranty. IF YOU HAD READ MY POST, I said they were at risk for all the Vespas still in warranty if the Piaggio filter caused an engine failure.

I admit, I missed your link, but so what? I confirmed the source for a free manual.

Just because your dealer blew you off doesn't mean that Piaggio or every dealer feels you don't need a manual. Your dealer uses aftermarket oil filters and missed a sale on a manual. Very interesting.

Just a note - there aren't any hard-copy manuals available for the newer Piaggios. There isn't a version 'for sale'. They are available to dealers as pdf's on the dealer network - thanks to some enlightened ones they can now be found elsewhere, on MV in particular.

That is good to know. However, the dealer should have told the interested party they were only available on the dealer network instead of saying they were too complicated. Less of a put down that way.

Oh quite agree - but some dealers are pathetic at customer relations - quite why those ones are in the business escapes me entirely.

I fully endorse doing one's own spannering after warranty is over.

On the subject of duff filters - I had a few of those back in 2003. Turns out there was one of several machines that spot-welded the back caps on that wasn't quite up to the job, so they tended to spring a leak. It was only Piaggio badged filters that had this problem, all batches were identified and recalled. Other identical filters made in the same factory were just fine. Info as passed on to me by my dealer at the time...

do you really think because piaggio oil filters are the best just because they would have to pay out during a warranty? I don't think so, they make more of a mark up on thousands and thousands of over-priced oil filters- that would cover the cost of any warranty claim or replacing the oil filter! Not all the recalled Piaggio oil filters were on scooters still under warranty!
here is one link for some hard copies of Work Shop Manuals:

Tell you what. Get a roll of toilet paper, cut it down so it fits in an orange juice can, jam it on the nipple and have a good ride. Can't be any cheaper.

Thanks for the tip. Got 4, and as the Vespa LX/GT filters are also used on my Buddy 125 I expect these will be good for that too, even tho the Buddy is not listed... Laughing emoticon

Just a note - there aren't any hard-copy manuals available for the newer Piaggios. There isn't a version 'for sale'. They are available to dealers as pdf's on the dealer network - thanks to some enlightened ones they can now be found elsewhere, on MV in particular.
If someone wants a printed out copy, we do sell hard copies.

To the best of my knowledge these are the right Part #'s for the oil filters

HiFlo 183 #314-0183

Champion C320 #10050445

Malossi-Red chile #VM 0313382

Athena #FF P002

Piaggio #82635R

(just found the Part# for the Champion. now looking to find where i can get a big box of them in Canada)

I was curious about the hi-flo filter and saw this advertised about there product ...

HiFlo produces high quality filters at an affordable price. All filters meet or exceed OE specs and are specifically designed for your scooter

the buzz words ... "meet or exceed OE specs"! so should 't i feel comfortable ordering these for the 300 ?

Jim does a ton of mileage and uses these filters so without any issues so aren't we getting a little paranoid over the whole filter thing ?

another fact someone brought up was "there have been no known engine break-downs becuase of a filter ... has anyone heard otherwise ??

same for engine oil... i been riding for decades and have friends who use walmart oil in there scooter, sport bikes and bmw's and have never had an engine issue or an engine blowing up because of the oil...
