I have been having issues with the weight of my Nolan modular as of late, and tried to find a light weight DOT helmet to take its place. I finally decided to call a London dealer (designer helmets), and see what they suggested.

I was hesitant to spend the money I did especially given it not being a DOT approved model, however given the light weight and anticipated comfort, I hope that an expenditure of all $700.00 is worth it.

The exchange rate is better than it has been for a bit-hard to believe given the price- and he discounted the helmet for me, and is throwing in some extras.

Does anyone have experience with A Shuberth C3? And yes I should have posed this question prior to spending the money. I am told it is the lightest modular in the world now-probably still not worth the money.

I live in PA., which has no helmet requirement if you are over 21 and have taken the safety course, so the non DOT is not a legal issue. Of course they could repeal the law and then I have a very expensive bowl!

I learned in the MSF class that DOT stickers are easy to get. You could always put one on the back and be approved.

While I can not seem to get off the $$ for the Schuberth all that i have read about them is great and should serve you very well. As far as the "DOT" sticker I have never ever in 30+ years riding on the road heard of anyone being stopped or checked for anything in the fullface style helmets for a DOT certification. Now if you have one of those little beanie type helmets yes I have heard of people being stopped and ticketed. The schuberth would probably meet or exceed DOT standards but they are not tested because they are not "imported" into this country for resale.

2manycars,

As long as you have the European safety standard stickers ((BSI and/or ECE)) you should be fine....

Helmet Laws
WOW! In my naivete' I didn't realize there are states that do not require petrol heads to wear helmets. My friend of 50 years, Mike Kaplan (Mike Kaplan Cycles, San Luis Obispo, CA) spent $50,000.00 in legal fees litigating California's helmet law and is, to my knowledge, the ONLY person in California adjudicated "Not Guilty" of violating the State's helmet law for not wearing a helmet! People v. Michael David Kaplan, San Luis Obispo Municipal [now Superior] Court, Case No. M230696 (per the Hon. Donald G. Umhofer). Right, wrong or indifferent he certainly put his money where his mouth is!

2many,

That is a damn nice helmet. I have heard such good things. La cabeza is priceless. I don't care how much someone spends, as long as they have one on. Toreador Pants.

I have a C3 and I love it. Damned expensive though!

It is better than the Shoei Multitec that I had previously.

Thanks for making me feel a bit better about the price
Yes, it is very expensive. I also have the shipping, customs, and exchange rate to deal with. On the other hand it is supposed to be very light for a modular and very well made as well.

Now I have to cross my fingers that it fits me-one of the problems with mail order.

My head measures 60 cm-which is right between the L and the XL. The store recommended the XL, and also said they can get me larger "cheek pads" if the size is wrong since they both use the same shell.

At least no one has said it is an awful helmet.

I have a Schubert modular, the C1.
I love it very much but I find it is a bit large and heavy.
I understand that the C3 is smaller on the outside and less heavy.

Schubert Helmets are the most quiet modular helmets you can get.
So, I am sure you are going to love this helmet

Funny thing here in Texas. It is legal to ride in Texas without a helmet under one of the two circumstances: 1. You have 10,000 in life insurance and carry documentation of that with you. 2. You successfully passed the Basic MSF class and have that documentation with you.

Now here is the funny part. You can wear no helmet but you will be fined if you wear a helmet without the DOT sticker.

So what would they do if you were not wearing a helmet, had the DOT sticker on the back of your neck, had 10,000 life insurance but no documentation on it, and only made it halfway through the MSF course and to top it off, you're on a 3 wheeled half scooter/half motorcycle.

That sounds hard to believe-but then again it is Texas
We lived in Texas for 10 years and loved it, so I am not knocking the state(especially after living in the commonwealth of Pa. for two years now. It seems hard to believe that if no helmet is required due to the exemption, that you can be fined for wearing a helmet that is European spec.

If that ever happened I would tell the officer it wasn't a helmet, merely a hat I chose to wear

"absurdly expensive" 700 USD helmet ?

Lucky you, but in Europe that amount of money is normal for standard helmet from decent manufacturer like my Shoei XR1000 etc.

Ok you purchased it why? My opinion? Just get a Snell approved DOT hat that fits and enjoy the ride...once it is broken in and you are used to it you will love it. My 2 cents for all they are worth.

by the way, go with full face because anything else may leave your pretty face....well not so pretty if it comes to a wreck...heaven forbid!

I purchased it based on Weight for a modular
I really like a modular helmet, and have tried other styles. I had the Joe Rocket full carbon helmet, and the weight was good, but I like the flip up style.

The Schubert C3 at 1570 grams is among the lighter helmets, and the 1st or 2nd lightest flip-up.

I will admit to some concern about ti not being DOT approved, especially with the new labeling laws (larger DOT letters, contrasting color etc.) but Pennsylvania -unfortunately is a no helmet required, at least for over 21 with experience, or a MSF course.

I am convinced that the European safety tests are as good as the DOT standards, and really needed something lighter to help with the neck discomfort I often get.

I normally don't make suggestions for items like helmets (they are often a matter of taste), but I decided to update my Nolan N100 flip-up and ultimately bought an AGV Miglia modular/flip-up.

The Nolan was nice, but it was always heavy, and the two-handed release was a pain.

The AGV has a seat belt-like buckle chin strap (I liked and wanted to have the same type of quick on/off of the Nolan), and is one of the most comfortable helmets I've ever owned. I bought it based on several reviews on the Internet, and I can honestly say it was a GREAT purchase!

The biggest "killer" of them all was the low price - I picked it up for under $140 (check out motorcycle-superstore.com for example).

Like I said, I know helmets are personal things, but the AGV is a really high quality product, it's Italian (if you want the matching country of manufacture with your MP3), and a great price. For some reason they are very understated, but its a really good one to consider. I have every intention of staying with them when my wife goes to upgrade hers, and have already suggested it for other family members as well.

I have a Shoei 1000 and a GIVI X 01 which is not DOT approved. I added a DOT sticker to because we have serious helmet laws here. The Shoei is better in the winter, but the GIVI is AMAZING in the warm weather.

I just found a site for absurdly expensive helmets (and other items) including the C3 that offers a 10% discount and includes freebies with the order.
http://www.sounddistribution.co.uk/main.asp

Here's a new review for the C3.
