Press Release: For immediate publication
Date: 10/29/08
Subject: Ride to Vote

On Election Day (Tuesday, November 4th 2008), make your vote count in the polling booth and on the road - by riding your motorcycle or scooter to vote!

No matter which candidates, propositions and issues you support, please help demonstrate that motorcycle and scooter riding is an important part of our world's mobility landscape. Ride to your polling place, park near the entrance, and wear your riding gear when you cast your ballot. Let the other voters see you as a rider! Election day is a great day to let everyone know you "Ride to Vote, and Vote to Ride"! So record your vote, and let your riding actions be seen. And spread the word with 'I Rode' and 'Vote to Ride' stickers:

Download "Ride to Vote" Stickers and buttons here: www.ridetowork.org/signs-posters-cards-propaganda-art

Print (on adhesive paper) these "I rode to vote" stickers/buttons. Wear yours to work, and wherever you go during the rest of the day. If anyone asks you about your "Ride to Vote" sticker, remind them that riding is a good solution to many social, urban mobility and environmental issues.

Spread the message and encourage others to join the "Ride to Vote" effort this year. And please pass this email on to other riders to help encourage "Ride to Vote"! rides. By riding everywhere on Election Day, you make a statement about the value and importance of motorcycle and scooter riding.

For additional information, please visit the Ride to Work website at: www.ridetowork.org.
The 18th annual Ride to Work Day will be held June 15th, 2009

The "no politics" rule was to prevent divisive (argumentative) discussion. Talking about politics in general, or voting in general, is fine. Now, if the posting was saying to "ride to work to vote for ...." then we would be having a different discussion.

We are just along for the ride....and to think differently is delusional. IMHO.

I plan on riding to the polls just to cause a little stir. Living out in a rural area a scooter in the parking lot of the polling place should spark a few comments. Razz emoticon

I've been doing a lot of stumping for my candidate this election cycle. I volunteer to canvass the rural areas in the valley I live in and always ride my GT. It's a real ice-breaker.

Walk, drive, run, ride, crawl. Just please, vote.

I can definately see how that would be an attention-grabber, as opposed to folks just walking around trying to get the message out. Also something to be easily remembered.

Rode my scooter down to San Jose City Hall on Monday to personally drop my "vote by mail" ballot off. Sure, it defeats the purpose of voting by mail, but I got to 1) vote early, and at home, 2) take a longer ride to City Hall than I would've to my polling place (if voting in person), and 3) visit the government "hub" for California's 3rd-largest city. It felt good!

Colorado has mail-in and early voting. I was told about 60% are predicted to be mail-in.

The other day, I was riding my GTS around, lost as usual, into the nearest town to run an errand at a store and right next to the shop was a polling place!

So I peeked in with full gear on, and it didn't look busy. Unfortunately, I didn't have my wife with me, she won't ride pillion. So the next day we drove the car down and voted...not even one person waiting in line ahead of us!!! The folks working the place said it was the mail-in option that was making things go smoothly. So maybe voting problems are history, least in these parts.

And Colorado is supposed to be a battleground state.

Anyway does that count with driving the car down? I at least found the closest place by accident with my GTS.

Rode my scooter the other day to drop off my ballot at the post office. I'll put my other one in the mail later today. Then, on Tuesday, I figure I can vote in person on the way to work and after the shift change of poll workers in the afternoon, I can vote again on the way home. Then, ride over to the other precinct and take advantage of that new on-the-spot same-day voting procedure. Ah, ya gotta love out system.

Errrr, maybe we'd be better off in the cage:

Car crash risk rises on election days, study says
Death risk goes up 18 percent but that's no reason to skip polls, authors say

By LINDSEY TANNER
updated 4:01 p.m. ET, Tues., Sept. 30, 2008

CHICAGO - Could voting for president be hazardous to your health?

An analysis of Election Day traffic deaths dating back to Jimmy Carter's 1976 win suggests yes, but the authors say that's no reason not to go to the polls.

The study found that on average, 24 more people died in car crashes during voting hours on presidential election days than on other October and November Tuesdays. That amounts to an 18 percent increased risk of death. And compared with non-election days, an additional 800 people suffered disabling injuries.

<snip>

Rushing to get to polling places before or after work, driving on unfamiliar routes, and being distracted by thinking about the candidates were among possible reasons cited by the study's Canadian researchers.

I've voted in every election that I've been able to, even when it is only town council. Have not ridden in a car to the polls since the Bucks County municipals in 2001. Walked to the polls in Arlington Va. for a few years after that. Have bicycled or scooted while living in College Park, Md.

That's the sport - Vote early and vote often!

We will ride across the island tomorrow to drop our two ballots (one for each of us) at the DHL office.

There's a not-for-profit, non-partisan group of American expats in Germany who cut a deal with FedEx for folks overseas to ship our ballots by FedEx for only $23.50 US, versus 31 Euro (FedEx, DHL). Got all pumped. Pay on their web site and print out the prepaid shipping documents. But, before I spent my money, I stopped by the courier service that handles FedEx here. Turns out they deliver FedEx, but do not ship FedEx.

So, DHL will get our 31 Euro again this election for getting our ballots to our voting office in WA State. Weather is forecast to be the usual beautiful.

Best to all

Same here for same reason #1 - though I dropped mine at the Santa Clara County registrar's office - it's on my way home from work. Then got some fine BBQ from that small stand on the Old Oakland Road. All in all, a good day.

Sorry Witch!

Maybe you should take the scooterists' advice and "DRIVE like they're all out to kill you!"

Good luck on your test! External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text

I took mine on my Mom's stick-shift Nissan Sentra and the idle was "off", it stalled out on my first maneuver with the official in the car. He still passed me. Just relax and you should have no problems.

I just got back from voting. My wife and I went together and then she drove off to work. She was #18, I was #19.External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text

We arrived at 6:45 am for a 7 am opening of the polls. By the time they opened the doors of the Township Building, the line was going down the street...

While we were standing in line, the parking lot got parked so full people had to reverse out of it, people were parking in no parking zones, double-parking, blocking exits, some woman ended up backing her Camry up over a curb and a piece of the car's trim went flying off.

Finally, people started parking on the far side of the cinder shed (you know, road gravel for the Winter), and then new arrivals followed along.

But, based on what I saw -- no, I wouldn't recommend riding scooter to go vote. Unless you park a few blocks away and walk the rest of the way in.

I rode, and voted -- vote #40 at my polling place.

One thing we can all agree on -- I'm SO GLAD this race is finally over...

Agreed on that. I am in Bed-stuy, Brooklyn. My wife and I were in line for about 30 minutes, at 6:45 am. Last time around, there was about 45 people total in the whole place. We could feel it, the excitement, the good feelings...
I hope that my team wins, very much.
