Around the Mid-Atlantic region the deer are getting real frisky. I'm seeing herds on the way home. It gets spooky when you see some on one side of the road and others on the other side. They get in a panic state and not sure what to do which could mean jump right in front of you. If you are in an area know for deer, go as slow as you can. They will hurt you, especially the one with horns, if you meet up abruptly. Use caution.

I wonder if the Aussies have the same issue with the Roos?

I am always careful on the scooter, but between the rats with antlers and the wet leaves in unexpected places this time of year, extra caution is in order.

By the way, this thread is definitely NOT NSR.

another thing to keep in mind is that this time of the year, the deer are in rut. it is their breeding season. deer this time of year are all hopped up on hormones, and they do not 'think' correctly. they will do wacky things because of this, including look right at you and then walk right out in front of you (even more than usual).

Why not Scoot related?
I drive through the woods at 3 AM every morning for about 10 miles everyday..
I see those over sized hat racks every morning, close call with one of them...

Worst incident so far was dodging 1 dead critter ( at 3 Am) and when I swerved I swerved right into/over another dead critter in the headlights dead spot...
Dead racoons make awesome speed bumps...

Tony, please use caution. You are only allowed one wreck per calendar year and already have your allotment for 2008

We have a deer that is showing up not twenty feet from the garage pad, and hence our cars and scoots when parked there. I'm wondering if the bear has left because I don't think the deer would take it's place unless the coast was clear.

It has this thing going on with our cat. They stare each other down, each trying to figure out if the other is a threat to itself.

It's not very timid. I took the GTS headset apart with the deer watching.

Also, the elk are very bad this time of year, but also most of the time as well. Much bigger than the deer. Another threat with the elk are tourists that stop their cars on the roadside, or sometimes IN the road to take pixs. I've seen them walk within 30 feet or so of an elk with p&s cameras which is literal Russian Roulette.

Please give these things a wide berth, for your own safety. And I imagine in even populated areas there will be a lot more than you think out there on the road at night like skunks, raccoon, foxes, etc.

Kangaroos can be dangerous in less built up areas but are also known to be found in the suburbs at times looking for food.....probably due to the chronic drought our entire country is facing.... at dusk is when they are most active...... very strong animals can write off your car if you hit one

I use the deer whistles. The low frequency is effective against deer when you're a quiet scooter like a GTS 250 because it doesn't compete with traditional engine noise. I've allready gotten into arguements with other riders about their effectiveness. I don't really care whether someone else "believes in them". All I know is, I've noticed a night and day difference now that I have them on....the deer just freeze and look at me from far away, instead of not noticing me until I am right on top of them and spooking!

I was just thinking about this last night and then on my ride home I passed a few of them on the side of the road. We have urban deer in Austin; it gets weird sometimes. Once, I saw one at a bus stop waiting for a bus.

Fuck Bambi.

Is it illegal to mount a s-h-o-t-g-u-n onto a scooter? Kinda like those old war Vespa's with various weaponry attached to them.

Take a look at what happens when you hit a deer at 140 mph on the German autobahn in a BMW Z4 .... and wonder "where did the deer go?"

I remember the urban deer when I grew up in Austin. They would frequently give birth to new fawns in my friend's lawn up in the North Hills area. They are also quite suprizing to see standing around in the middle of the road just staring at you when you come down a hill at night. They almost give you this look like, "What the hell is your problem? We're supposed to be here."
