Hi all..I need some help.
The tube that the rear brake cable goes in to is in BAD shape. Rusted out..part of the cable is stuck inside...and ain't coming out.
Is this part replaceable? Any suggestions for a fix?...(other than "just use the front brake"..."buy shoes with thick soles")
And no....I did not cut the floorboard out to take the picture!

Thanks
Glenn

That I don't know, in the second photo it looks like the outer cable,( hence the answer about WD 40) but in the top photo it looks as if it should be there and the inner cable is fed through it to connect with the pedal. If that is the case then it probably explains why it will not move

My concern is that it's part of the frame. The end of the old cable is rusted into the tube itself. I have looked at pics of new cables...and that part does not appear to be a part of the cable assembly....and I can't find it on any parts diagram. I may have to manufacture something....hoping somebody has encountered this before and can give me some direction.

Its part of the frame.

You'll have to cut it off and have something made, machined to fit correctly, to replace it. Or find a crapped out donor frame, see if that piece is useable, cut it off and weld it on.

The bit in the bottom pic is what stops the cable. Doesn't look the worst I've seen. Test it with a cable before you cut it off. It might be useable.

I had a similar situation with the choke cable on my Allstate. I used a close fitting drill bit and spun it in the tube. It caught the coil of the cable outer. I kept at it until I was able to grab the coil of the cable outer with some pliers. It's like stretching out a spring. At least your floor is already open to give you some access.

If the old cable has rusted into it then again spray it with WD 40 or a realeasing spray then try pushing it out with the end of a new cable. If it's badly rusted in the keep applying the spray ( leave it to work for a while first though) and keep trying

WD40 is crap to release seized things. Try PB Blaster or a penetrating oil.

The WD stands for Water displacement. Its not real good at penetrating things.

Thanks everybody....I was hoping it would be as simple as just buying a new piece...oh well.
I think I'll just close the garage door for the rest of the day.
Andrea.....I'll be calling you soon with my parts order.
Scooters Originali comes VERY highly recommended by everyone I have talked to here in the Detroit/Windsor area.
Thanks again everyone

can't leave it alone...
how far inside does the cable casing go?
Is the inside diameter of the tube the same all the way through? and then just a smaller opening at the end to allow just the cable through?
I hope I explained that right.

It has actually occurred to me that the bit that you've been trying to release is actually the cable stop but I didn't really think you'd be trying to get that out.

The outer tube is one piece. The complete cable goes inside and then the narrower inner part in the tube stops the outer cable from moving any further, just allowing the inner to move to activate the brake.

Think of that piece as shaped like a test tube with a small hole in the bottom. Only the cable inner should be able to go all the way through. The cable outer should slide from the rear of the scooter all the way up to the point where the small hole allows the inner to come through. I hope that makes sense.

Thanks Killo....just got off the phone with Scooters Originali and got the scoop on the mechanics of it. If I can't get the tube cleaned out, or if it isn't salvageable, I have an old push rod (out of something) that may be the right size...as long as the ID is correct...it should work.

Thanks

Heat is your freind when it comes to rust. You probably dont have an oxy/acetalane torch(which may be overkill anyway) however you can go to the hardware store and buy a propane plumbers torch and heat that baby up. That torch does not get hot enough to melt what you have there. Try and get it red hot and have some type of metal rod to poke out the stuck piece-make sure you are wearing some thick leather work gloves and have a spray bottle of water by your side for safety, while performing this.
