I was looking at the electrical diagram for the MP3 500 last night, and I'm curious as to why the front wheels each have a speed sensor.

Probably a really simple answer.

I figured the bike doesn't have ABS, so that's not it. If it's for the speedometer, then why two?

Anyone?

To be sure, to be sure.

As the tilt-lock must come off if the bike is doing more than 10kph, the 'brain' has to be very sure that it is getting a speed reading - and speedo sensors do fail.

Also it makes the design of each side symmetrical, another plus.

Makes sense... redundancy. Do they electronically drive the speedometer too? I haven't looked that closely.

Yes, the dials are all driven by stepper motors.

Just curious, could it have something to do with the fact that the two front wheels on a lean in a twisty are going at slightly different speeds due to pressure and the distance they're traveling around the curve? Is my Mp3 really that smart?

The difference won't be that large - but I bet the 'brain' does some sort of calculation. Just what I don't know.

I'm pretty sure the calculation is:

Wheel 1 = 65mph
Wheel 2 = 66.7mph
Seat =strained from Fat guy on top
Chassis = Strained from cargo + Fat guy on seat
Wheel 1 slowed to 60mph
Wheel 2 sped up to 75mph
Toss on twisty complete
Strain on seat/chassis alleviated
