This is for people in NEW YORK.
I will need someone to go with me at the test, with a car and a motorcycle license.
It is at the RED HOOK test site FRIDAY NOV 28 at 10AM.
I can pay $100.
Thank you.

Well, here things are complicated.....
To do the test you need a person with a vaild Car and Motorcycle license to go with you. Also you need to have a car. I think the dynamics are the following: -The person w motorcycle license drives the scooter there, I drive the car. -During the test I drive the scooter and the other person is driving the car w the instructor in it, following the scooter... Something like that Also if you think that I have an European International Motorcycle license and I am not allowed to drive the scooter because I am a NY resident... Anyway a pain. |

In Oregon, the most convenient way to get the motorcycle endorsement is to take the Team Oregon motorcycle course (a MSFaffiliate I suppose). At the end of the course, they administer both the written and driving exams. If you pass, the certificate is good for an endorsement at the local DMV without any further testing.
I briefly considered taking the exams at the DMV, but the hassle of finding someone to bring my Vespa to the testing location legally turned me off of that. Best wishes, David |

What would you do if you didn't have a car licence? Many bikers here in London have only a bike licence, there's no point in driving a car unless you have squealers to transport.

I know it doesn't make any sense. You need a person with a car license (if you don't have one), a person with a motorcycle license, a car, a scooter.
Pure pain. The fact that I have an International Motorcycle License and I am allowed to drive all over the world except from the city where I reside is absurd. |

Man.... makes Ontario seem easy.
FIRST pass a written test, get your M1 (no passengers, no nightime, no highways, no booze) 3 months later - pass a simple parking lot test, get your M2 (no booze) 2 years later - pass a full road test, get your full M (go ahead and drink now) Show up for your road test with your own ride. The DMV/MOT supplies the tester, a driver for the tester, as well as their car. |

In California, we can get our permit first by taking the written test. This allows us to drive solo and during the day. I just drove myself to the DMV for the driving portion.

My only concern is that this guy is basically asking you to let him drive your car, for $100 dollars.
Not that I'm untrusting...<.< Actually it makes more sence to find someone who drives a van, (like I do) put the scooter in the van, then drive there. ⚠️ Last edited by Hiro Blade on UTC; edited 1 time

Not many laws in NY make sense. I actually splurged on the MSF course so I did not have to go through the hell you are experiencing with typical NY state red tape-Good Luck on your test.

In fact, a lot of the North Eastern states don't let you ride on a permit at night even when they insist you are accompanied by an over 21 full mc license holder. Andrea |

For what it's worth, the logic behind the licensed motorcyclist and bring your own car requirement is that the licensed motorcyclist can escort the applicant to the test site, since state law requires that a permit holder can only ride in the company of a licensed motorcyclist. The car is to follow the applicant around during the test, since the test-giver does not have a car (for all other types of road test other than motorcycles, the test-giver simply sits inside the same vehicle as the applicant during the road test). Also, if the applicant fails the road test, the licensed motorcyclist is still needed to escort the applicant home from the test site. The process is essentially the same for automobile road tests--applicants must provide their own car and be escorted by a licensed driver. Brendan ⚠️ Last edited by hendon on UTC; edited 1 time

Just out of curiosity, does NY accept an out-of-state motorcycle endorsement if you move there and give it to you automatically, or do you have to jump through all those hoops to get the 'M'?

The MSF course isn't your only choice.
I used these guys for my NY test. It's a one day thing. http://www.prodriveny.com/vespa.htm Great value. |

I have a test scheduled 4 weeks away, if they are able to schedule something earlier I will def go for it. I still can't reason with the fact that I can legally drive a motorcycle all over the world but the place where I live. It is messing my mind.... |
