Thanks guys... went ant picked up my b-day present today. Despite majoring in jazz performance on the upright in college, i haven't owned one in 7 years. I had to get back on the horse again. :

My daughter plays cello; she's got a soft case with straps on it, and one day we rode to her lesson with it strapped on her back. We made it, but just barely. Stupid me. Since the Cello is worth more that the GT I had to draw a line...no more cello hauling on the scoot. |

I do have a bag for it with backpack-like straps on it as well. I thought it would be funny to take a picture of me riding the SS or something with it on my back...

Now you gotta get an endpin stop so you don't scratch up that wood floor.
Those cheapo plastic covers that come on the endpins are next to useless and wear out pretty quickly. I wonder, do you ever bow that bass? If you don't, or you haven't yet you should try it. Happy Birthday Eric. (oh, already said that) |

Happy B-Day!
I showed Hubby your bass because he's been a bass player since he was 16 and would pawn my Vespa for an upright right now if he could. He was wondering what brand, when made etc...? He's impressed and asking for specifics. |

Since the Cello is worth more that the GT I had to draw a line...no more cello hauling on the scoot. My daughter plays Cello too, currently a 3/4 soon to be full size. I would not even attempt to get her and the Cello on my GT. I regularly do the school run with No2 daughter on the scoot - school bag, laptop and Toreador Pants for both of us but the Cello is just to big and awkward, let alone damaging it. Glad your one attempt didn't end in tears or injury. BTW - wicked instrument Eric!!! What a birthday pressie. |

It's an 60's Kay bass ( so, american made ...in Elkhart, Indiana, i think )
Kay made some duds, but this is a really nice sounding one. It's laminated, not carved ( so he likely won't get TOO excited about it.) and as such it wasn't terribly expensive.... but i gig regularly and it will get loaded in and out of my car, and play gigs in hot and cold temp variants, smokey rooms, etc. As such, only a laminated bass would hold up to the abuse i'm going to put it through. I'd crack / damage and otherwise ruin a carved bass in no time. I put a nice "realist" brand pickup on it ( transducer ) that sounds spectacular. And no, i didn't even bother with a bow. I had one in school, but i rarely used it. I suppose some of the slower songs we play i could use it on, but remember that i'm the only rhythm section in my band, and as such the pizzicato part i lay down has to double as the drum line and keep everyone in time. |
