Go buy this scooter and start riding it to all my club meetings in detroit before mine is 100% complete, just to show me up ... making my grand unveiling all the less grand.

I'll punch you in the balls.

I will say this - that thing is gorgeous. Wrong legshield trim ..wrong seat cover...wrong horn...wrong taillight lens... but gorgeous. Those are things most people would never notice anyways.

I can't remember who does the restos at Fullerton Vintage, or if i know that person. It's a pretty well done resto.

Mine will be better Razz emoticon...but i don't think this person has the level of OCD that i do

Plus, if i was just building one to sell it i don't know that i'd go through the same amount of anal-retentiveness than if i was building a perfect example for myself. I am my own worst critic, and i'd have to deal with that every time i rode it.

That is OCD as you are? Could there ever be such a thing? I think not!

Though this guy's resto is not 100% correct at all, I was quite impressed with trying to adapt newer technology in a vintage scoot:

Eric - will the restoration on your SS feature a 12V conversion as well? I'm curious. I can't imagine going through all the work of a resto without doing the conversion. What do you think?

Overall a very good lookin scoot. Nice guy too!

The conversion is basically using 12v coils on your stator ( bajaj coils, i think ).

No, i don't plan on doing it at first. If i find it's really weak, i'll start with remagnetizing the flywheel. If it's still really weak, then i'll try the conversion.

Nice. Based on the pics you had posted of the paint job and the laborious detail, I can imagine you'll have a sweet ride on your hands.

Thanks Eric! (and other kind words, other people!)

Sorry, getting late to this thread. This if my first post on the forum (didn't realize they dealt Vintage here too.)

That bike wasn't a "throwaway" by any means, but it wasn't intended to be a concourse museum resto. Just a solid bike.

I actually based this bike on leftovers from my last SS180. I had about 70% of a complete SS leftover, and figured, "what the heck...I'll just build another one." Turned out okay, I wasn't going to trip over small details anyways- just build em solid, and send them down the river.

It ended up going to a friend of mine, which is pretty cool.

Here is my last SS180 (now resides in Australia, actually..):

Haha, thanks. Jay, right? (I'm bloody horrible with names, sorry!)

That was so strange. Los Alamitos is a very quite town, scooter-wise, only a couple other guys out here. Weird to see a guy out of nowhere drop by me taking pics and know what he's looking at!

Chroming the Grimstead
Hey Collin,

Great bikes !! I was wondering. You gave props to all that helped you with the Grimstead except the chroming guys. Can you tell us what the deal was with those guys ? I don't have the mag anymore and don't remember who chromed the cowls, but you did not seem happy with them.

Frodo.

Thanks Frodo.

It was Astro Chrome and Plating in Van Nuys CA.

Basically, they were referred to me by West Coast Lambretta Works, who use them because they are cheap and supposedly did great work.

Most chrome shops have an eye for things that need slight working, copper filling etc. when you bring a part in. Astro flat out told me "that will never look right.....you can't chrome these." He was talking about the panels, which had some pitting. I left some stuff there to get chromed, they jacked the prices up on me, holding stuff hostage until I paid. Their chrome work was appalling.

I ended up finishing a LOT of stuff over at South Bay Chrome
www.southbaychrome.com amazing work, higher prices but you know what....? You get what you pay for. Always.

It's funny to me how one shop (Astro, that has been in business over 50 years), will swear up and down that chroming something is "impossible" and another shop will just DO it. When I chrome stuff, I want it looking perfect, and paying money for the work comes second to quality. Telling customers it's "impossible," so you can keep prices down is dumb.

So, I threw them a big NO-thanks.

Plenty of other great shops and people went into that bike, for sure.

Cheers,
-Collin
