hi there, I have a 1963 vnb vespa (see following post):

http://www.modernvespa.com/forum/topic34193?view=previous

and havnt done much with it, however I have a problem that I would like some advice on. it was starting well with a couple of kicks a couple of months ago, until it started to play up - I like to kick it over now and again just to blow the cobwebs out.

it was firing, running for about 3 seconds, then cutting out, and from there it wouldnt start again.

now - it doesnt start at all, regardless what I try.

I have had the plug out and cleaned it up, checked for a spark against the engine and all looks good.

I have taken the air filter off, and put a cap of fuel straight into the carb (just in case the fuel tap was a bit wonky), still nothing.

im not sure what to try next really, I would be happy if I got a single fire out of it at the moment, but it seems dead.

I intend to do a full resto on it, including an engine rebuild, but like I say, it would be nice just to get a fire out of it in the meantime to keep me happy

can anyone help me get this puppy running again

well - its been in there for a couple of months I suppose - but I topped the tank up with some fresh stuff, plus I put some fresh fuel direct into the carb, either way - I would have thought U would have gotten a fire - at the very least?!!??

no?

Have you checked the compression? Also, try a little bit of ether enriched fuel that has a bit more "ignitability"

I guess you mean by testing the compression you mean sticking your finger in the plug hole ??

That's one approach. And then there's this:

Which is a wee bit more accurate.

haha - yes - I guess so, but for the lack of having one - I guess the finger test will do. there certainly feels like enough compression when kicking it over, and obviously when the plug is removed, its a lot easier

so I guess I have "some" compression

hmmmmmm not sure what to try

A capful or two of ether directly into the carb would let you know if there is any ignition. Spray can engine starter fluid, for example. Just a try or two, lest you create lube problems.
