hardcore vw fan for years. I have a '65 bug and a '75 camper van. Wife has an '88 golf cabrio. But I end up using my scoot most of the time. The vw's are more for holidays and summer cruising. The campers is great though.

this is my bug:

This thread KILLS me. I have been looking for a VW bus for nearly 6 months and surely saw that one on Ebay. I am so ready to pull the trigger on an Ebay Bus however a little fearful of not getting what the pictures show. I would love to buy one in California, anything 60's up to 90's, just a bus to go to the beach overnight and take my kids for ice-cream.

If anyone remembers it, I posted the link to my Ebay auction for my grandfather's shortened '59 VW bus awhile back.

I like the AIR COOLED VW's..never owned one, but I still think they're super duper.

Yea, quite a bit of us here also love VWs. We have had our share of bugs, busses, a vanagon, and a ghia. This was the last one we had, and I wish we hadn't sold it.
And one of our daily drivers is a 2001 Turbo Beetle

Had the following;

'63 beatle
'66 beatle,
'71 beatle.

If they still made the bug I'd be driving one today.

No, I don't consider that new thing a beatle. I've never quite decided what to call it.

If the engine ain't in the back, and it ain't air coold, it ain't a bug!

We just bought a 09 VW Jetta TDi, nice that one can actually afford it in the USA. In Germany the "peoples car" is not really that cheap... Really like it, getting around 40 mpg's and still breaking it in.
Had a Ford Focus Diesel before this, still love it. But I would never buy a US built Focus, drove one once and was not impressed...
Diesel all the way!

Really like the old campers too, they are just so stylish and nice. Would not mind having one someday!

Loooove VW - Currently have a Jetta TDI - w/ Hypermiling I average 50 / 55 MPG in that baby.
I had to get a rental last year when our Tundra was in the shop and they gave us a Ford Explorer. This was about 2 months after we got the VW and the quality differences were apparent. In the Ford there was fake "chrome" all over the place (to up the flash factor we Americans insist on), the plastic felt cheap and the whole car seemed like it had a lifespan of about 4 years +/-. Never, ever get that feeling in a VW- they're made to be driven 4ever!
Saw the CC @ the dealer last week- Had to use my shirt to wipe up the drool all over the nice leather seats...

WOW!!! That bus is beautiful. We have owned a slew of VW's from old Beetles and old Westfalia Campers to Beetle convertibles as well as a modern Beetle, a GTI. I have a neighbor who owns two, 60-something, restored buses.
I just love the things...................too bad I have zero interest in going into the hot dog business. Good find, Mullman.

My inlaws have a 2001 Jetta TDi. Really nice car and gets high 40's mileage. Where did you get the diesel Focus and how difficult was it to register it here in Texas?

Oh and when I got married I bought my wife a beautiful 73 bug (she always wanted one) but she ended up not liking the stick so I drove it. It was a blast! I would probably buy another one if I still lived in Nor Cal. Afraid of the vapor lock issues here.

Okay, long story to follow.

Have owned and loved...

'69 bug (wife's car when we got married)
'70 bug (my first car)
'78 Rabbit Diesel
'79 Rabbit Diesel (purchased new)
'79 Westphalia Camper
'80 Dasher Wagon Diesel
'84 Jetta Diesel

Now, the story...

In my early Navy days, I owned a motorcycle; a Honda Dream. It came to the time when I decided that I wanted to start dating. A motorcycle wouldn't do, so I needed to purchase a car.

During one of our deployments to Viet-Nam, the war was pretty intense, so we never got the opportunity to visit ports-of-call. It was just war, war, war. The result is that I was able to save $1,600 during the deployment, which was a lot in those days.

After returning home, I went to the local Datsun dealership (in those days, they called Nissan cars "Datsun" in the states). I test drove a brand new Datsun 510, which was supposed to be a pretty hot car. Something just felt "funny" about that car. The gauge of metal used in the door panels was very thin and it felt like the door flexed when closing it. Then, while driving, I had the feeling like the wheels were going to fold up under me.

I thanked the salesman and told him I'd let him know. The next day, I went to the next town and drove a two-year old bug. I remember thinking, "Man...this thing feels solid!". I asked how much it was, and after being told, said to him that I only had $1,600 to spend.

He said he could sell it to me for that, and started writing up the paper work. Of course, with sales tax, license, fees, etc., etc.; it came to more. I explained, "Oh, you must have miss-understood me. I only have 1600 hundred." He was a little taken aback, but after getting approval, said he could sell it to me for that.

Remember, I was pretty young and naive in the workings of "high finance". That was such a good car that since that time, except for the exception of my Ford pick-up which I purchased to haul my kayak around, I've owned German automobiles exclusively. Over the years, I've had a '59 Mercedes Benz 190D, a '68 Mercedes 220D, a '69 Mercedes 220D, a '80 Mercedes 240D, and currently a '89 Mercedes 300CD. Also throw into the mix a '74 Opel Manta and a '75 Opel Manta. All good cars, except for the '68 diesel. Sold that one after a few months because "it just didn't feel" like a Mercedes should be.

Seems like I've had a lot of cars. Add to that a Puch scooter (my first motorized transportation), the Honda Dream, a Honda Silverwing Interstate (the motorcycle version, not the current scooter), and now the crown jewel of them all, the GTS. But, except for the diesel I sold straight away, I've always put at least 200,000 miles on each car I've owned, and have been driving for 39 years now.

Oh, still have that truck. It's pushing 280,000 miles now and runs fine. A bit of unsolicited advice to anyone wishing to purchase a new truck or car...always pay the pittance to get the "towing package". That will give you a bigger radiator sometimes along with a beefier alternator, maybe an oil cooler, a different thermostat that opens up a little earlier, and maybe stiffer springs. All in all, designed to allow the engine to run cooler, which extends longevity. For the fifty or so bucks that ask for the towing package, it is a no-brainer decision.

Oh, David... The '79 bus camper (Westphalia) was without a doubt the most fun (and useful) vehicle I've ever owned. I'm considering finding another one so I can dump the tent trailer and the truck. Looking for a Vanagon verison with the full camper package. Good luck in your search. With the economy tanking, they might be easier to find.

Bought and sold my bus on thesamba.com - 1978 Westy Deluxe. It was not a show bus, we camped quite a bit in it as a younger family.

We've also owned a '97 Jetta and a '00 New Beetle GLX.

Oh dang!!! That is a sweet Notchback. My first car was a '72 Squareback about that same color...but not nearly as nice. I was raised around VWs (Beetle,s Jettas, Vanagons, and now a Golf).

Mullman, I highly recommend a camper van. We had a Westfalia growing up and it was awesome. We'd camp anywhere and everywhere, almost every weekend. It was great for trips to Disneyland, get there the night before, and be one of the first ones in the gates (back when they had a campground). I've thought about getting one now for my wife & me to play around with.

I was in the German Military at the time and was sent to the US for training. Without the military papers I would not have been able to import it or register it because of the emissions, and I had to take it back when my training was over. Loved the car, although everyone warned me about the Diesel here and what problems I would have, drove it for 1,5 years in the US and 1 year after that in Germany without any problems.
