Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!
No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out (our great blessings.) They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or suffereers in the lamentable civil strife in shich we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the woulnds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed. Abraham Lincoln October 3, 1863 Passed by and Act of Congress |

Been making stock and roux for the big day tomorrow. I've got two birds brining in a cooler, and mountains of brussels sprouts ready to be sautéed in mounds of butter.
Mmmm.... I'm getting sleepy just thinking about it. |

Working--have vague recollections of what a house smells like when a turkey is cooking. But it's worth it to be at 45,000 feet looking down...

Every year, a friend of mine who happens to own a very popular restaurant http://www.jollyrogerbvi.com/pictures.html (just down the street from me) throws a pot luck dinner for friends and regular customers. (No, I am not in the pictures, I was the one taking them!)
He cooks 18 to 20 (22 pound) turkeys and the rest of us bring whatever dishes we feel like. In previous years I have done home made turkey gravy, pumpkin p i e with home made whipped topping, home made stuffing, candied yams, asparagus, shrimp dip and crudites, California rolls (that was a nightmare!), home made cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and a green bean casserole. This year I am taking the easy route and doing creamy cole slaw with green apple slices for 250. Many folks bring their guitars or whatever instruments they happen to play and several pick up bands are formed on the spot. There are a lot of American and Canadian expats living here ... so we all celebrate Thanksgiving together! It's great fun and a wonderful party with a cash bar which usually goes on until the wee hours! This year I am taking my landlady and her 13 year old son as my guests because of course the BVI does not celebrate Thanksgiving and they have no idea what a real Thanksgiving dinner is like. I KNOW they are going to love it! Yippeeee! It's turkey day! Hope everyone has a great time! |

Best wishes to everyone here for a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
Was out early this morning on the Vespa and I could tell everyone was somewhere else. A ride across campus at 9am would see thousands and thousands of students choking the road. Today it was all mine... ![]() Thanksgiving Day

Yes I'm thankful for a number of things and the way they seem to be working out at this point. Not everything like economics obviously, but I think maybe there is reason to be hopeful about life.
And now about turkeys: Much more personality than chickens... In addition to raising chickens we used to raise turkeys, but the damn things are too smart, regardless of what you've heard about them being stupid. They jumped the fence a lot, yes they can fly somewhat, except the industrial butterballs bred for meat. Once they discovered surrounding trees they preferred roosting there (esp females) instead of the hen house, a real PITA to try to get them down for the night. Predators got them outside fence or they would join wild flocks around our house. Yes we have wild turkeys in the neighborhood. I can do both female and male calls, having put up with the racket for so long. They like to respond to each other. Noisy. If I do a male call with some force behind it, male turkeys will chime in a chorus and try to drown me out. The males are funny because they belly bump each other, and with male humans too. They puff up, fan out tail feathers and then essentially play bumper cars with each other or guys. |

My family left there in 1957. Happy Thanksgiving to all. I put our bird in the oven about 90 minutes ago. |
