To hold the spring compressed when I remove the nut holding the shock absorber to the exhaust bracket?

I have never replaced shocks so I'm not familiar with how they work.
(I invision the spring expanding stretching out the shock and me not being able to get it re-compressed.)

I have decided to change my own tires as well as a lot of other maintenence this winter to save some money and get a better understanding of the GT200.

Put the GT's centerstand up on a block of 2x4 or 2x6 then your wheel and shocks can hang and expand fully, this way you won't have any compression in the shocks when you take the rear axle bolt out.
