Okay, so I'm totally jealous. My husband and I just finished holiday in Scotland this past summer where we rented a car. Now we want to rent Vespas in the UK or on the continent - perhaps France or Italy for our next holiday there - summer 2010. Of course, here in San Diego I don't have to deal with the rain like you, so maybe you should be jealous.
I'll be in London in 6 weeks, but only for a few days, and I'm bringing a bunch of high schoolers, so ufortunately no scootering for me there - but . . . I'm definitely going to find a Vespa, take a photo with it and lie and said I did! |

Jealous why would we be jealous ? OK it rains sometimes but look what we have on our doorstep. France, Italy, Germany and Belgium with all that history, culture and architecture and some of the best roads in the world.
The French coast is 1 hour from me and Paris is only 2 1/2 hours away. Jealous ? naaa. Regards Billy-no-scoot Having said that if there wasn't any weather the English would have nothing to start a conversation with. |

Okay so I am jealous, especially since I teach European history. A question - When I'm in London April 3-5,where I can get an "L" that you put on cars, scooters for a Learner? I want one. Also, is there any way I can talk someone out of a local patch? I would trade a Motorsports patch for it. (They're here in San Diego) I'll be staying at the Days Inn near the London Eye with my students.

you can pick up an L-plate at any automotive supply store - google Halford's, you should be able to find one nearish to where you're staying.

I still have authentic L plate, ridden on, disregarded, complete with veneer of genuine London filth.
You can't take hazardous waster back to the US so I agree with genie's suggestion of Halfords. You'll also find them in any petrol station. |

I think that we should organise a run to the days inn that evening to say hello and present our visitor with her L plate.

The ferry docks in Dunkerke at about 13:00 local time. It takes half an hour to get off, so we should meet somewhere convenient at about 13:30.
I don't know Dunkerke, so I leave the choice of a good meeting place to those more knowledgeable. |

Pre Europe meets/American relations near the Eye could be a goer.
I'm going to suggest that whoever meets us for the Ypres/Ostende/Brugge ride out meets us the Campanile Hotel car park which is opposite a huge roundabout as you leave the docks. You really can't miss it. From there it's only a little way from where we can pick up our route to Ypres. Bill X |

When I get closer to my trip to London, I'll repost. I told my students today that I might have some "friends" meet me in London. Oh . . . I also have San Diego Scooter shirts I might be willing to trade for cool local London stuff. They say "SD Scootz - San Diego Scooter Fanatics and Friends" on them. Since I made them for one of my clubs, I can trade. I'm out of guys 2XL and XL, but have other sizes, and ladies sizes. Go to the San Diego Scooter Meetup web site, look for Megamod and I have photos there of the shirts.

I had a thought today: can one of our Continental friends tell me whether 125cc bikes are allowed on the Autoroute? I seem to remember the limit is 150cc.
(I was blissfully unaware of this when I took my GT125 across in 2005 and had no problems, FWIW.) |
