You are cordially invited to attend Curt Fargo's Coming Out, Scooter Ride & BBQ
Where: Napa, California (Alston Park)
When: August 6, 2006
Time: Meet @ 2:00, Ride @ 2:30, BBQ @ 5:00

I have been held back from scootering over the past 3 months and missed a lot. My Doctor is finally giving me permission to ride again on August 6th and I can't think of a better way to do it then with a bunch of my friends.

After the ride through the Napa country side, we will ride through Sonoma and back to our starting point for a shrimp, hamburger and hot dog BBQ. Please do join me in this day of celebration.

Noting that this is a last minute event, an RSVP (curt@fargo-ent.com) would be nice but not required so that we can estimate the quantity of food to have on hand.

Directions: Go to Napa,
Hwy 29 to Redwood Rd.
West on Redwood for 1 mile
Right on Dry Creek for ½ mile
Park is on your left

Wouldn't you know it? I'm going to be at the MSF class in SF that morning. Don't know if I'll be able to get back to the East Bay, retrieve my scooter & make it to Napa in time. Or I could ride the scoot into SF (do bridges count as freeways?) & straight to Napa afterwards. I'll try, so count me in. Looking forward to seeing the faces that belong to the names on this forum.

Please count me in for two, as my wife will ride shotgun and take pictures as we ride.

Also please let me know what I can bring along with any donation that is needed.

Look forward to meeting some other Vespa riders as I have never done a group ride before.

We're still trying to figure out how we're going to get across the bridge.

I have a trailer that will carry 4 scooters and will ferry scooter across the bridge if anyone dosen't want to ride across for any reason. If you need help from further away, let me know.

I am more concerned about getting TO the bridge itself . . . people speed way too much between Berkeley and that bridge.

Lemme know what you guys decide, I could cage it over there also with Chris.

It's possible to get to the base of the bridge via surface streets. It takes longer, obviously, but it's not quite so nerve rattling.

That's very generous, Curt, but you're running the event -- it seems like it would be selfish of us to drag you across the bridge to ferry our sorry asses over to the other side when you're busy with other stuff.

That sounds really good, I am not as concerned about the other side of the bridge. I think that the Bay and the Richmond bridges are probably the worst ones around here, but you'd probably know more than me, I've only been across the Bay Bridge once (round trip) and I was almost peeing my pants on the eastbound trip back at 65mph on my little LT150 with Chris behind me in the car!

If we take the surface streets to the bridge, do you think it would be a problem if Chris rode with me, or should he follow in the car? I think we may be ready for a 2up ride now, we've been scooting all over Berkeley together.

New bridges are kind of daunting (to me) so I would tend to lean away from riding it two-up until after you're more comfortable on bridges in general and maybe whatever one you want to cross in particular. I don't think I would do it two-up, not even on my GTS, but I'm still a relative beginner myself. Riding two-up makes everything harder, though -- if it were me, I wouldn't want to make it any harder than it absolutely has to be.

I would try to get my brother to help and this would be something I could have him do possibly. I don't want to force anyone to ride beyond their means be it across a bridge single or 2 up. But I do want everyone to join in on this celebration.

I think the prudent/wise/safe thing to do here is to have Chris follow in the car, no 2upping required - and of course, I'm totally assuming that Chris will be able to attend at all with his wacky schedule. I am also remembering that I almost fell over at the Bay Bridge toll plaza from the oil . . .

So Curt, please RSVP me for two but a definite one. Do you need us to bring anything?

If there is a group of us on the Richmond Bridge we dont have to be rushed into going 65. The speed limit is only 50 and if there is more then one then what is traffic going to do but go around.

Also I have ridden that Bridge two up many times and would be happy to join the pack for a slow cruise over.

It sound like a hell of a coming out party. I can't be there, but will donate for a patch.

Coming out is, I'm sure a very scary thing, but as you can see you have a lot of support here.

I think most of us suspected, anyhow.

For clarification purposes, I'm straight, but fat and happily married. I'm not coming out of the closet but coming out to play on a scooter as the DR wouldn't let me play for the last 3 months.

Not everyone knows me and some relate "coming out" to mean coming out of the closet. I wasn't offended at all; I just wanted to make that clarification.

Group Ride Across the Richmond Bridge
Curt,

Thanks for the invite, I'll come for the meet & ride but then will have to leave for a family function in the evening - so no need to stock any food for me.

To All my Bay Area Scooter'in Friends,

I live in Point Richmond - at the foot of the Richmond Bridge and I ride it all the time on my GT 200. You have nothing to fear - you certainly can do it safely yourselves...but, if you'd like an escorted Group Ride over the Richmond Bridge as Damien had earlier suggested, you can meet me at the Chevron Station just off I-580 @ the Canal Street Exit in Point Richmond (a very safe area, about 1 mile from the Toll Booths) at around 12:30 (ish) on Sunday the 6th - we can all ride it safely together. I'll also get you past the I-580/101 afternoon choke-point in San Rafael by a quick short-cut I know and we can all tootle up to meet Curt by 2:00. We'll leave the Chevron Station by 12:45 to make it to Curt's pretty much on-time and we should have fun doing it.

If this sounds like something you want to do let me know so we know when everyone's arrived and we can go ahead and have a fun ride through Marin County up to Napa.

Directions:

Exit I-580 (West-Bound) at Canal Street.
Turn left (South) at the light and go under I-580.
The Chevron Station is on your right about 100 yards ahead.

Meet around 12:30 and leave by 12:45.

Bridges
Why would anyone go over the Richmond Bridge from the East Bay to get to Napa? Isn't going over the Carquinez a lot quicker? And if people are queasy about going over a bridge, the Carquinez is much, much shorter than Richmond.
What am I missing here?

The Richmond Bridge itself is about 3 times as long as the Carguinez and the route is 15 miles longer. I called CHP and they said that if we had concerned slow moving scooter. to put the largest, brightest vehicle (like an SUV) at the back with flashers going.
