I have a '74 US Rally with no wiring, battery, ignition switch (goes by the fuel tap) or other electrical parts except for the stator. The stator appears to correspond with the 1974 US market wiring diagram for Rally 200. That is, the ignition has the black, red, blue, and green wires. For the wiring harness there are black (ground), purple (connects to the red ignition wire-kill?) yellow, yellow, and two whites that are joined into one connector. Each lighting coil on the stator has a yellow and white wire coming from it.

Questions, assuming the actual stator wiring is OK:

1. How do I connect the output wires into a wiring harness for AC only?

2. Is there a way to convert the existing wiring into 12 volts? Is that necessary? I would like to avoid the expense of a P crank, stator, bearings, flywheel and case split/rebuild if possible.

3. Any suggestions for a voltage regulator? Do I need a Vespa specific part or are there more economical alternatives?

4. Are there Ac flasher units to keep the turn signals? I have the turn signal switch on the left side of the headset.

5. What ignition switch would work. I

6. I'm assuming this stator will work with the Ducati conversion as described online assuming the pickup and ignition coil are OK. Good assumption?

To go AC only, you could get a 6v AC 3 pole regulator, run one of the yellow wires into it, run the rest of your electrics hanging off of that, and ground the other yellow wire at the junction box.

That would get you 6v AC. It wouldn't be the world's brightest, but whatever.

Personally, when the stock 6v DC battery system works on the 74's, and your rectifier charges the battery, i say leave it be. That bike is worth more stock with the original electronics than all ganked up to 12v AC. Trust me as someone who's done it once ( converted a rally 200 to 12v ac ), and left the other 2 rally 200's he's owned bone stock to preserve the value and integrity of the original machine. The first thing i wanted to do when i got my first rally 200 was to make it look NOT like a rally 200 because i was a n00b and stupid and i thought the 70's style bikes ( particularly the striped rally 200 ) was ugly and i really wanted something that looked like a VBB. It took me some time to realize that people with VBB's want Rally 200's, and not the other way around.

My 2 cents. If the bike is all painted up like a flamed out hot rod, disregard what i'm saying. But if your bike is in good original condition, i say leave it that way.

I wouldn't mind considering keeping the bike original electric wise, but the thought of building a complete wiring harness to match the original is rather daunting, as well as finding all of the bits to complete the circuits. From what I can tell this is the electric system that I would need to reproduce as the stator wires are the same:

The only parts of the electrical system I have besides the stator are the head light, turn signal switch, and the fuse box (for 2 fuses).

Oh..if you don't have the other bits i guess i wouldn't worry about it, unless you're dead set on having a period restoration bike.

Not sure about the white wires. I gotta look at my diagram and see.

Have you had a chance to check your diagram for those white wires? I'm wonder if grounding either the two whites or the two yellows, then running the remaining ungrounded wires from each coil to a 6V regulator would work?

Any clue on a switch to use for the ignition ground in the off position?
