It occurred to me that it would be cool if there was a patch for scooter tag players. It could be a "generic" nationwide one so that costs could maybe be lower than trying to get one for each location. I don't have too many design skills or know anything about getting patches, but I thought someone else on here might...? 8)

Maybe a scooter with a camera? Something...?

I think it would be "cool" if the whole patch were shaped like a camera...but might cost too much. Maybe do the "scooter tag" lettering in a brighter color?

I have no talent but perhaps someone with some skills could make this one? The back of a digital camera with a scooter in the display with the word TAG! Instead of having the brand of the camera like Canon have Modern Vespa on it instead.

Does anyone know what the first tag that was posted to MV was? Maybe an hommage to that pic could be used?

Here is what I was thinking. Of course I cannot edit photos for a darn maybe someone can edit the idea with something more polished. I also wanted a block building (one color just a shape) in the background but couldn't find one quick.

Oh and I took the scooter from one of the main patch nominations. I just wanted to give credit to where it is due.

my problem is that i have very good techincal skills with photoshop but not an artistic bone in my body. And right now I can't seem to find my bootleg of photoshop so I'm doing this stuff in gimp.

I was thinking of putting something in the background like you suggest but it would have to be an easily identifiable object that had a simple shape to compensate for a patch's low resolution. The pyramids or the GG bridge come to mind and they are very much in the spirit of the game. Any south bay icons that would fit the bill?

It could be anything in the country I think with a definitive shape. There are scooter tag games all over the country going on. Maybe a couple shapes from different areas in the background. GG bridge would be good for Cali. For Texas you could have a star, etc...

You could also have a landscape of skyscrapers or other notible buildings from the locations where scooter tag is popular. For Austin it would be the frost tower, SF would be the transamerica pyramid or GG bridge. Have someone from each tag location recommend the building that will be in the background.

This could get too cluttered though.

I think the cost of making different patches for each area of the country would make it unrealistic to do so. Based on my limited knowledge of patches and some knowledge of design from previous sign-making and art classes, I think it will need to be pretty simple. My concern about the back of a digital camera is that it is going to look like just a rectangle when it is rendered in thread. But, I think once we get several ideas going, we can vote on it and see what everyone else thinks. What do I know???

I'm also wondering if by not putting Modern Vespa on there, people playing tag on other sites might be interested in buying one, too. Not that I don't love MV, but patches are less expensive the more you buy...

I agree with everything you've said. And of course, putting MV on a patch would have to be run by Jess.

Now I'm wondering how much a run of patches would cost. I would be willing to contribute. And we need to get more people interested in this I think.

8)

I was figuring I'd just order a batch of 'em once everyone had decided on a design and try to figure out if I could set up a thing on PayPal or something. Then, just charge people for the cost of a patch and a stamp. If they were "generic" (ie - w/o MV), I'd probably post on the other site about it, too, to see if anyone over there wanted one. If it's soon enough, I could probably take some to the rally in Austin in May, too...

This thread reminds me of a thread on MB that resulted in the now sortoffamous SPAZ patch, pictured below.

External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text

I've done enough patches at this point that I thought I'd toss in my $.02 for anyone interested.

The first thing is, it needs to be instantly recognizable as what it's intended purpose is. In this case, it needs to send out a camera and scooter vibe.

I like the ideas above of using a "camera" shape and adding some kind of scooter image into it. And the "snap" sound a camera makes only using "tag" could be cool. I also like the shutter graphic idea with a scooter integrated somehow. The red BENQ camera is simple enough that if you used it's outline and added a few bits to "sell" the idea its a camera and thru in the scooter graphic on the screen, it might do the trick.

In the case of the SPAZ patches, the art and ideas bounced around in a thread like this, and we picked a design we liked from the community. I then cleaned it up and made it patch friendly and viola. That was cool, to see the ideas go to and fro, then see a product result from it.

Things to consider... amount of colors, amount of embroidery, KISS.

The SPAZ patch above was 100% embroidery and they ran $250 for 100 patches, $200 for 75, $150 for 50 from Modern Suede (who are also extremely cool and Scooterists!). I've also got patches for my club from Swisscraft, who's stitching isn't as tight, but their prices are a wee bit lower. Both make excellent patches if you provide them with good art.

For the first run of SPAZ patches, I just got enough interest and fronted the money myself. The 2nd time around, I took enough pre orders so pay for most of the cost. Either way works. You just need to account for the cost of the patch, shipping and packaging, and any fees like if you use Pay Pal. So you don't lose money on it.

At this point, I've sent out 170 SPAZ patches and around 75 of my club patches... all paid via Pay Pal and invoiced via my invoice software. It was a labor of love and I enjoyed every minute of it. Esp when people start receiving their patches and go OOHHHH AHHHH over them.

I've done the scooter tag thing a few times and always enjoyed it, and I am a freak for patches, so this kind of thing interests me as well.

This is totally just taking a very light stab at something... the "content" on the screen was just a vector bit I had at hand... You'd want to bold up the lines and give the details a bit more pop as well as make the content more interesting on the screen... and then add in some kind of "TAG!" thing that adds some "action" to it... maybe offset off the edge to the left to make the outline more dynamic.

Anyway, just a quick idear, randomly picked colors, etc. So don't crucify me too much for the design

If anyone wants the vector art to play with and try to make it more "cool" let me know.

I like it! I don't have the talent to pull something like that off. Maybe a sun with radiating bands in the back of the scooter with some landmark that is a single color.

Whatever the choice is I think it definitely should have a camera and scoot in the design.

You could also have a figure holding a camera taking a picture of a scooter.

I think if you get a bit stylized instead of "realistic" it would also be cooler. Anyone here a good artist who has a unique style that would translate well for this? I could see a cool rough sketchy kind of thing with maybe 2 colors besides black and white for this.

I'd like a SPAZ patch! How can I order one? I think the TAG! patch is going in the right direction on design. Can't wait to see what we all come up with (and then the finished product). Thanks for all the input about "how to"... I was looking at PayPal and couldn't even figure out how to set up as the payee instead of payer (well, I'd need more than two minutes). Once we get a design everybody likes, I guess the thing to do is get a rough count of how many people would be interested. I was thinking it would be cool to have a scooter tag sticker to put on my cage, too. Any thoughts on that?

I don't have a cage for a sticker. Wife would have a cow if I put it on her car. Do you think cap metro would mind? Anyway for paypal you need to set up a link to a checking account and get verified and then you should be good to go. Just be careful they can lock finds in your account if someone reverses their credit card charge. You have no protection if you are not selling through eBay.
