So in theory I have an air leak somewhere.
If you're getting loud pops when you back off the throttle and let the bike decelerate, you more than likely have an exhaust leak. The gasket between the head and the exhaust pipe is fairly low tech, and it's difficult to get both sides of the flange equally snug.
Put the bike up on the centerstand, let it idle, and block the tailpipe with a heavy rag or towel. If the bike doesn't shut off, you've got air getting out somewhere. Find out where, and you'll more than likely get rid of the backfiring.

Backfire
It's not OAT (outside air temp). The temp here in WA State today so 56F and My Fly 150 3V still backfires. It is most noticeable when going down a steep hill and rolling off throttle. Upon reaching the bottom of the hill, then adding power to accelerate there is a squeak, chirp, screech sound that comes from the gear box. All fluids (AMSOIL & Royal Purple) have been topped. Que pasa?
