I just purchased a used GTS 250. I've filled it up twice now and the digital gauge is only two ticks past half full. I filled it after seeing no ticks and then put 1.7 gallons in. Am I filling it up wrong? Also, there have been times where the first and last tick start blinking even after trying to turn the key off and back on again. After a few rides it goes back to the regular reading.
Any thoughts?

I believe the first and last blinking is a error code indicating the sender isn't working.

thank you for your response. by sender do you mean the signal sender that's supposed to communicate from the gas tank to the computer?

Yes.
I think your options are to use the trip odometer and fill up every x number of miles, there's also a yellow low fuel light that may still work (that's what I use as a fill-up indicator) or to have it repaired (read replaced) by a dealer. Here's a thread about it: GTS gas gauge roiscoe wrote: Mine is doing the same thing. Jess said it's an open circuit and either a wire is loose or the fuel sender is bad. This is how Jess decribed it-- "Take a peak in the engine compartment -- on the right hand side, you'll see the gas tank. There are two electrical connections on the GTS gas tank -- one is the fuel pump (the lower of the two, with two black hoses coming out of it as well) and the other is the fuel level sender unit (the higher of the two, with only wires coming out of it). If you can, wiggle the wires and trace them back to where the go into the harness. If that doesn't solve the problem, you'll probably have to have the dealer install a new sender. If you're really ambitious, you could do it yourself, but it's a pain in the ass, and requires an elaborate technique to wiggle the gas tank past the engine so that you can get to the sender." I have no loose wires- so I need to replace the sender Hopefully yours is just loose! Regards Harvey |

Any Solution to this Problem?
Is this a bad sender? My new 2007 (yes, new) has the same problem. No blinking lights, but even with a full tank it only reads one click past half full. Would be interested to hear if the OP or anyone else has figured this out. Did a search and couldn't come up with a definitive answer.
Sorry for resurrecting an older thread, just wasn't sure if this was a known issue as far back as the 07 model year. Thanks, Brad. |

I'm not sure what you imply by "known issue"? I have a 2006 GTS with the same problem, and lately I've been driving a 2006 GTS belonging to a friend with the same issues. My 2007 GTS does not have this problem. It's simple to fill-up, re-set the trip odometer and drive 130-150 miles and fill up again. It's a bad fuel sending unit, that is all.

When I said "known issue" I was simply referring to whether or not I'd get the deer-in-the-headlights look from my dealer. The GTS is a 2007, but it's new and thus has a warranty. Figure I might as well get it replaced on Piaggio's dime (not that I didn't pay for it in the first place).
I know there was some mix up between the sending units for the 250 and 300, but I wasn't sure if they even made a European 300 in 2006/2007. Thanks! |

They didn't. So it's not the exact same issue - but GTS250 senders have often been found to be 'faulty'. Sometimes just removing them and 're-adjusting' them has worked. Sometimes it hasn't - new sender then. Rinse and repeat in some cases...

Dealer has replaced the sender and the problem still persists.
They also replaced the instrument cluster. Now they're tearing apart the ECM. Anyone have any idea what's going on? Could the replacement sender be bad as well? They seem to be chasing their tails and have a "call in" to Vespa... but who knows what the response time will be there. Any suggestions? |

it's has been known to happen (two bad senders on the same scooter), well at least once: Bernie wrote: I had this problem two times on my GT 200. Both time it was problems with the sender unit. It was fixed under the warranty. Harvey |

Update
Vespa returned the call and advised the dealership that it was probably indeed the fuel sender-even though they had already replaced it once. So the dealer today pulled a fuel sender off a new bike and installed it.
Still no luck. So far they have replaced the fuel sender twice... the ECM once... and tomorrow they are moving onto the wiring harness. If that doesn't work they said they'll have to have the Vespa Rep come out and look at the scooter and see what to do. Anyone have any idea what this means? What happens if they can't solve the problem? Hate to be without the scooter... it's prime scooting weather here in the Midwest. |

Not sure about which state you're in, but if the dealer and manufacturer can't repair your scooter, it's time to find out what your lemon law coverage is. Once you own your rights are, talk to your dealer about how they're going to resolve the problem. I don't think it's going to some to that, but you should know where you stand so you can bargain effectively.
Here's some good advice on dealing with your dealer when these things happen I want my Vespa back That really sucks. Harvey |

I have the same issue and had found this site six months ago while looking for answers. The speedometer has always been a question as well. Both seem to be loose estimates.
I've just learned to go 5-10mph faster and think of 2 ticks past half as full. |

Hey scootertog, I recently needed an electrical overhaul because of the previous owner. During that time, I had the dealer fix/replace the fuel sender. Seems to work great now! I hear it's not as easy as just changing a wire in a minute. Apparently they need to remove various parts that gain access to the sender. Well worth it if you are in to see the dealer for your next service.
Good luck with taking care of it! I haven't checked the accuracy of the speed but I hear most Vespas, old and new, have that quirk. |

Fuel Sender No. 4
Today they are installing the fourth new fuel sender into the GTS. The Vespa techs know it's an issue and have overnighted a new unit. Their advice to the dealer is "keep replacing it until it works". Apparently it's not the first time that it's taken several tries at getting a functioning unit. So far they've been courteous and quick... I'll keep the forum posted as to how it works out. Hopefully I'll be back on the Vespa this evening.

Fuel Sender
Well... the fourth fuel sender seemed to work. However two miles down the highway and the scooter lost power and fuel was gushing out from above the exhaust. I didn't have a chance to take a good look, but I am assuming that in dropping the fuel tank they somehow failed to properly reattach the fuel pump.
When I turn the key and the fuel injection kicks in the fuel gushes out from the bottom of the scooter. Hence my suspicion of a poorly attached hose or improperly reinstalled fuel pump. Scary having gasoline dump out onto a hot muffler. Does this sound like the fuel pump and/or hose connections? |

Pop out the pet carrier and check for loose hoses. Chances are that's it. Be sure to let the dealership know what has happened. This last problem is likely their fault. Once the dust has settled it might be time to look for a new dealership/mechanic.
